The specialty dish of Nanjing is the Saltwater Duck (which is true to its name - salty duck meat!). We had it for both lunch and dinner in Nanjing. The meat, although salty, is actually pretty delectable and tasty. Most restaurants in Nanjing should have this signature local dish.

A newly opened Indian and Pakistani restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Ramada Hotel, though quiet and small (we were the only group there when we went), the food more than makes up for it. The staff are friendly and the service was quite good, and the owner speaks English. We paid 300RMB for 4 people, but the owner gave us 15% discount as it's a new place, and we kind of know him.
Favorite Dish: The naan bread here was excellent, paneer naan, garlic naan and butter naan. Also try the Chicken Karahi or the butter chicken. The menu is extensive and it would be hard not to find something that you like. Very good overall.

A fairly small restaurant, with good service, where you sit and watch the food being prepared in front of you before you eat it.
Favorite Dish: If you go there, you HAVE to have the banana fritters, the chef cooks them infront of you, just watch out for your eyebrows when he sets them alight! The burn marks on the ceiling should give you an idea of what I'm talking about... The sushi is also very good, and try the beef and onions, or the bacon and egg.

Sunward Fishery Restaurant served a varities of seafood selection.
This is a new concept of a seafood supermarket where you can select your food or order your seafood and the cook will cook for you on the spot.
The "Da Zha Xie" crabs were in season. We didnt get the chance to taste this famous crab as we were on package tour. Do try it when they are in season.

The veggie buns are good (0.6 RMB each) and so are the beef guo1 tie1, pay directly to the nice auntie for any of these. The dough balls in red bean paste (chi4 dou4 yuan2 xiao1) are 3 RMB for a bowl and extremely sweet, beware! There's a Chinese menu on the wall behind the "cashier" so jab your finger at that and pay her the 3 RMB, then go to the middle window inside the restaurant, hand the auntie your slip/receipt and she'll give you a bowl of the good stuff.

The shop sells fat white Guilin noodles with a choice of different toppings, for anything starting from about 5 RMB for a big bowl. Don't know if there's an English menu (big red Chinese menu on the wall above the counter near the entrance) but I tried "quan2 jia1 fu2" which has beef slices, beef tendons and beef something-else (not innards), for 10 RMB. Excellent value for money, very filling and tasty!

There's a great stall at the left of the "gateway" to the Jiangnan Imperial Examinations Museum selling "liang2 fen3". There's usually a queue there so you can't miss it, if you can read Chinese it's called "Huang2 Ji4".
Favorite Dish: Something like cold rice vermicelli with garlic, vinegar and chilli sauce. 1 RMB for a small bowl and 2 RMB for a much bigger portion. Yummy!

An oldest Muslim Restaurant at Fuzi Temple District. Started operation during the year of Guang Shu, Qing Dynasty.
A variety of food to choose. If you can't take spicy one, just let them know when you are placing an order. Quite a number of the dishes are hot and spicy.
Favorite Dish: Must try salted duck, a cold dish which has 600 years of history. Secondly, don't forget to order Hot Pot Beancurd in triangle shape less than 1cm thickness.
