by we2364 City wall in Nanjing is highly recommended while visiting here. It is quite visible in many connecting areas which is between downtown and suburb. The large scale of construction started from Ming Dynasty(600 years ago). In the ancient time, city wall is built up for lining out the city, preventing the invasion of outsider which its function is similiar to the castles in European cities. Due to the historical reasons, many parts of the wall was tore down or was not well-preserved. However, the wall of Nanjing still maintain the record of the LONGEST CITY WALL IN THE WORLD. You have to get close to it to feel the difference by we2364 Nanjing, was in the plan of being the national capital of Republican Party (The one whom later governing Taiwan). Before the recession of Republican from mainland to Taiwan, the city scale was already well-planned while the style of architecture had been formed as a unique one. However, due to the latter large-scale urban construction, many unique buildings were tored down. Civil post office is the few left piece in the downtown area which you can dimly see the prosperity in the past time. by marsistanbul Zhongshan Mountain, located on the eastern outskirts of Nanjing, has been listed among the four famous mountains in areas to the south of the Yangtze river since ancient times. It is also called purple mountain because purple clouds can offen be found hovering over its peaks. The mountain covers an area of 31 sqkm. with the highest peak of 448 meters above sea level. For its unique terrain,Zhangshan Mountain enjoys the prestige as " a mountain of curling dragon" which boasts many places of interest such as magnificient Dr.Sun Tay-Sen's mausoleum,an imposing tomb of the Ming Dynasty,vividly-shaped stone sculptures along the sacred path, fragrant plum Blossom Hill, solemn and tranquil Linggu Temple,as well as numerous pavillions, towers and pagodas. All these masterpieces of architecture, together with the natural wonder of mountains and forests, turn the region into a reowned scenic area centering Zhongshan Mountain. In 1991,it was listed among "Forth top National tourist resort of China." Dragons on the waterfront by sugarpuff I didnt go here by day as my friend told me there was nothing worth seeing. He said 'meet me at 6pm' which I did, and we had a 'lovely stroll' down the street lined with clothes shops, snack food outlets, music blaring out loud on the speakers and then stopped in KFC which was opposite McDonalds for a cup of tea as it was a cold night! So as you can see, things have changed somewhat to when it was first built! I didnt even get to see the Temple as apparently its not open to the public anymore! There was a lake at the bottom of the street which was very pretty as there were lights everywhere and pictures of dragons which lit up and fountains which danced to the music. At this waterfront both day and night, you can hire a leisure boat which slowly takes you down to Zhonghua Men (the big gate in the north within the city walls). This I can imagine to be extremely relaxing, as, afterall, it was on this very same lake that the famous Tang poet Liu Yuxi wrote his most famous poem. The area was nice and it was apparent that both foreigners and local people visit this area often, and it almost reminded me of the Silk Market In Beijing, but hassle free!!!! Leave a Comment Directions: About 2km south of Xinjiekou, leads you to the Temple of Confucius area, which begins at Jiankang Lu, around the bottom end of Taiping Lu.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum by coolpanda87 Perched on top of a mountain, this mausoleum has spectacular views of the area! There is a total of 392 stairs to climb in order to reach the top. The building at the top is called the Sacifricial Hall, & inside is a marble statue of Dr. Sun-Yat Sen. North of the hall lies the vault, where a statue of him rests on a white marble coffin, under which the great man lies. Leave a Comment

A place for thought on the lake by sugarpuff Well I visited this place whilst I was on a business trip so didnt have time before to read about where I was going. Once in, apart from just one sign telling me I was in the former Presidential Palace, I wouldnt have known. Sure there were signs telling me throughout what I could see, and there were photos with descriptions in both Chinese and English, but it still lacked something. So now Ive read the guide book and understand that this place over six hundred years ago was a private residence for a Ming Prince. After the Ming, came the Qing and the building in turn became the seat of the Provincial Governor. Later the Taiping Uprising happened and it was turned over to the Guomindang Government where it became the Presidential Palace. Sadly, for me, once youve been in one government building, youve been in all of them! They all depict the lives of the former people who ruled the country, they show you a room which claims to be the person's former bedroom, with just one chair, a bed and a desk where he wrote his memoirs. I just cant get excited about it anymore. However the gardens we walked through, the Xu Yuan Garden, was lovely and I can imagine in Spring just how beautiful it will get. That is the photo I have posted on this page. They say the gardens are like those in Suzhou, and they're right. Truely magical. Leave a Comment Directions: 292 Changjiang Lu. About fifteen minutes' walk from Xinjiekou, and a short block north.

The construction of the sacrificial hall displays both the traditional Chinese style and the European style. On the door-head of the hall is inscribed with tiandi zhengqi(righteousness of the world) written by Dr.Sun Yet-sen and minzu, minquan, minsheng(meaning, people's rights and people's livelihood) by Zhang Jingjiang,a senior Koumintang official. At the center of the hall is a white marble statue of Dr.Sun carved by french sculptor Paul Randowsky while the eastern and western walls of the hall are inscribed with the Fundamentals for the Establishment of the nation drafted by Dr.Sun.The coffin chamber is centered by a lying statue of Dr.Sun by the Czech sculptor Gorch, under which Dr.Sun's remains in a copper coffin are buried deep. the R.C is located behind the Ascension Bridge with the Ming Tower standing atop. The R.C. is a unique large-scale in front of the Treasure Mound that is the first of its kind.It was built with slabstones on the base of stone Sumeru pedestals with girdle decoration. After more than 600 years' erosion, the outer wall has become rather variegated with lime white spreading over the whole surface, which makes it more historic. Mounting 54 steps through an arched tunnel in the middle of the R.C. is a narrow lane enclosed between the front wall of theTreasure City and the Rectangular Citadel, from which steps lead to the Ming Tower stop the R.C. on both sides. Designed by Lu Yanzhi,a famous architect, the construction of D.Sun Yet-Sen's mausoleum began in march 1926 and ended in spring of 1929.It is 700 meters from the memorial archway to the coffin chamber with 10 terraces and 392 steps between them, and the falling head reaches 70 meters. The main buildings of the mausoleum include the memorial archway, the mausoleum gate, the tablet pavilion, the sacrificial hall and the coffin chamber. On june,1 1929,a grand burial ceremony was held at the mausoleum which shaped like an alarm bell, symbolizing Dr.Sun Yet_Sen's unyielding spirit in fighting to arouse people and salvage the nations. Yuejiang Temple was quite magnificent. We walked to it after walking on the Nanjing Bridge. The temple is part of the complex known as Yuejiang Tower Scenic spot and includes the temple itself, Wanxian pavilion and other historical remains. The temple can be reached by using the path laid out by the park or by walking along the city wall. The temple itself is very different from others we visited in China in that you could enter the building, climb and access all the floors. On each floor was a different exhibit. On the first floor were portraits of all the Ming Emperors. On the second floor was a naval exhibit which we found quite bizarre and totally out of context and could only explain it in terms of Nanjing being a port. The ceiling is very spectacular - see photo. Open 8:00-17:00pm Entry cost:30 Yuan
