Mochou Lake is located southwest of Nanjing City. It occupied 47 hectares (116 acres) of land, which was part of the Yangtze River. Now, the lake is connected to Yangtze River through Qin Huai River.
Based on a legend of this lake, an intelligent and beautiful young women named Mochou from Luoyang city married to Lu living in Jinling ( today Nanjing) during Northern and Southern Dynasty. They lived a beautiful life here with their son near this lake. Until one day, her husband was recruited to serve the army to defend the country. He had not come back and without any new since he left. She missed him so much and hoped that she could flow with the Yangtze River to White Wolf River where he husband was located. It was named in memory of this young women who was faithful to her love.
I visited this lake due to my curiosity of the map showing a lady flowing on a lake, and it is easy to reach here by the metro.
When I arrived the lake, I got confused where was the main entrance and the charges. In fact, it is a huge lake you can enter the lake from any gate entrances, it costs Y27 for foreign visitors, free admission for the local who show their identification card.
It is a big park, or a small version of the West Lake in Hangzhou. This lake park is not only common for the locals to do exercises, but also a regular place for them to gather to practice their talent in music. I will highlight several attractions of the park including Dragon Boat Dock, Corridor, Guangdong Solder Tombs, Zeng Guofan's furniture collection of Qing Dynasty, Former Residence of Lady Mochou and Lotus around sorrow-less bridge.

Sorrow-less bridge is one of the three scenic bridges in Mochou Lake. It was originally built during late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, and later rebuilt in May 2006. Crossing through the sorrow-less bridge, you could never remember your problems, grief and sorrows. It would bring you happiness and peace all the time. An ancient poem written as:
" Never believe in so many problems in this world, They are all vanished and dispersed on the sorrow-less bridge. Wandering along the sorrow-less bridge, I feel free and easy to forget I have been depressed and blue forever. "
Standing on the sorrow-less bridge, you could see the lake full of lotus. The lotus creates a peaceful and calm surrounding that can ease your depression and sadness.
Zeng Guofan's Residence is just beside the lake. It comes with a traditional Chinese main gate, with beautiful Chinese garden with rock, trees, flowers, and plants. Surprisingly, not many people know this attraction, as I was the only visitor there. Zeng Guofan was one of the most powerful man in Chinese history. During his visit to Nanjing as imperial envoy, he rebuilt the Mochou Lake, which was destroyed by war, and bring back the peace and prosperity of the lake. This led to the renaissance of Mochou Lake and left over many treasures. Qing Dynasty rosewood furniture made in Cantonese styles were delivered here from the south by Zeng Guofan. These furniture are engraved with patterns of shells and rose alabaster, They are intricate and exotic to represent the splendid, luxurious, quaint, and graceful style of Canton furniture.

After the revolution of 1911, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen acceded to presidency in Nanjing January 1912, pronouncing the founding of Republic of China. However, Zhan Xun tried to restore the imperial court of Qing Dynasty by making an assault on the revolutionary army. The Guangdong army led by Sun Yat-Sen beat the enemy forces in the north, which safeguarded the newly-established Nanjing regime. The battle against Zhang Xun's restoration played an important role in compelling the Emperor of Qing Dynasty to abdicate the throne so as to abolish the feudal imperial monarchy that lasted 2000 years in China.
A tomb was built by the Mochou Lake to commemorate the 61 Guangdong soldiers dying a martyr in this battle. Sun Yat-Sen named the gravestone and Huang Xing ( a leader in the 1911 revolution) wrote the inscription on the tablet which eulogized the dignity and nobleness of the martyrs. Yao Yuping, the former commander-in-chief of the Northern Expeditionary Army (Guangdong Army) rebuilt the tomb in 1948. The tomb had undergone destruction reconstruction afterwards but today it is standing there upright with a new look, witnessing the history.
The dragon boat used to commemorate the death of Qu Yua, a patriotic poet who was said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river. The races symbolize people's attempts to rescue and recover Qu's body.
The year 1991 witnessed the dragon boat race on Mochou Lake attended by 120 teams from all around Nanjing city at the same time. Since then, scores of regattas are held here every year, among which one held during the Duanwu Festival (Dragon Boat Festival) has become one of the customary activities of Mochou Lake Park. The Dragon Boat Dock was built in 2005.
