To the north of the centre is a great double deck bridge over the river, proudly built by the Chinese after the Soviet Union withdrew help in 1960.
Well what we saw was impressive, but, the mist closed in and we were barely able to see the river, shame, this was to be one of the highlights of our tour for me.

Zhongshan Ling is the name of Dr Sun's mauseleum just outside the city centre. This is a serene and popular place for the Chinese to pay their respects to Dr Sun, the first President of China.
Interestingly we didn't see another "westerner" all the time we were there, maybe not on the tourist trail yet.
A shame about the misty weather, views over the purple mountains must be good after the 392 step climb, (not difficult)

The mausoleum area is huge and stretches up the entire hillside of Zijinshan to the northeast of Nanjing, and it is a busy place during the weekends. At the bottom, a ceremonial archway is etched with the word “Fraternity’ in Sun Yatsen’s handwriting. After a half-kilometre boulevard flanked by gingko and maple trees, is a further gateway, this time etched with the words “The World Belongs to the People”. High up above is the white marble mausoleum hall, up 392 steps: this flight is deliberately designed to hide the mausoleum building until the last step, intending to remind visitors that the revolution ‘ain’t over until it’s over’, although I’m sure Sun Yatsen would have expressed it somewhat more eloquently.
In the mausoleum itself, a statute of Sun Yatsen stares down silently, while the surrounding walls are etched with the entire constitution of the first republic.
Behind the mausoleum is a very small and very quiet garden among the pine trees, and a worthy place to rest and contemplate what might have been had Yuan Shikai not forced Sun Yatsen to the fringes of Chinese politics in 1912 at the very time when Sun’s skills and diplomacy could have changed the course of Chinese history.
