The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first bridge to be built across the Yangzi River in 1968. It was also the first double-decker, double-track highway and railway bridge designed and constructed by the Chinese without outside engineering assistance. It is 6,772 meters (22,212 ft) long and has a span of 160 m (525 ft) — it can take up to 15 minutes to cross during regular traffic periods.
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is famous in that it is the longest bridge in the world with dual functions of being a highway and railway.
Get a taxi to take you to the bottom of the bridge at the Park of Nanjing and then proceed to walk up the bridge. It is very interesting just observing the sights of markets, fishermen, market gardeners, apartments, hovels, even thousands of workers (possibly prisoners)working on the railway track near the bridge.
Once you get to the top of the bridge there are two lots of magnificent monuments dedicated to the workers. As well you get a magnificent vista of the Yangtze river.

The Yangtze River is the longest river in China, and the 3rd longest river in the world (the first is the Amaon, second is River Nile). This Yangtze River Bridge is the symbol of Chinese independence and national pride. The Russians had pulled out of this bridge-building project, and they were confident that the Chinese would not be able to complete its construction. However, the bridge was built, defying its odds and naysayers. Upon its completion, Mao Zedong had promised the people that this bridge would be be toll-free. Up to this date, vehicles using this bridge are not required to pay toll charges.
We went up to view the bridge on a cold, misty morning, and could barely see the whole bridge due to the heavy mist.

Constructed over 10 years by 7,000 workers - after western engineers had given up on the difficult project - this bridge completed the first overland link between Beijing and the Yangtze Valley, and is of enormous symbolic importance to the country. This major monument at the site bears a rare inscription of the handwriting of Deng Xiaoping.
This bridge was one of chinese biggest achievement in the 60's when the south and north of china was link with this double decker bridge. If you wanna visit this bridge, I would suggest you to take a bus from Gulou. Can remember what bus as there was no number only chinese character. This bus actually passes the bridge into the other side of Nanjing. So you can stop right on top the bridge. There is a staircase going to the museum at the bottom.
Don't come in the night since its poorly litted, can't see much of it.
This grand bridge over the Yangtse River is constructed both for the railroad and the highway. The upper level is the highway and the lower one is the railway. The bridge is a beautiful one. It is good to enjoy the view of the Yangtse river from the bridge.
