This isnt so much as being in Nanjing, but in a city/town called Nangang, a 40min taxi ride away from Nanjing city centre.

There is no reason at all for you to visit this place as its a very small town with nothing of any touristy value, but I was there for a week because I was following the Nanjing Basketball team and it is in this town that they live, eat, train and play. So thought I would add an extra page just for this place!

These three wheeled vehicles were very amusing to both look at and ride in, but they do the job at just 3 yuan for nearly all distances you want to go.

    Nanjing Buses

  • Get a Nanjing map from any local news vendor, just make sure that the printing on it is clear as Nanjing is pretty huge.

As with some other cities around China, Nanjing has "Tourist Buses" which ply the routes to main tourist attractions. Just look out for the Y1, Y2 ,Y3...etc buses on the route map and double-check with the driver. One of the best initiatives of this is that the name of each stop is announced as the bus makes its stops along its route. This makes getting to certain areas much easier on the independent traveller. Some announcements also have English translations, unfortunately not all buses have been upgraded to provide this.

Hard-seat buses cost RMB1 while soft-seaters are RMB2, very very reasonable for some of the distances you might need to travel.

We caught the train Train T705 leaving at 13:20 from Nanjing to Shanghai. The trip cost 79 Yuan and took 3 hours.

This time we were in a train which consisted of seats in rows of two which could be turned around if passengers so wished. Each passenger had a tray they could put down. Train staff would walk up and down selling various items to eat and hot coffee or tea.

    Will write more later

for $1 RMB chinese dollar u can ride the old crappy buses, that will take u endlessly in one direction. for $2 RMB u can get a better buss with airconditioning, not nessesary in winter. the bus will roll down hill with the engine off, people are pollite, and no smells. they are frequesnt and on time. great way to see the town.

For a different kind of experience, try the bicycle. In fact, a greater feat would be using your cellphone while on a bike! The Chinese did it like a pro! A very contrasting image; China can be very advance in certain mode of communication while very laid back in their mode of transportation!

I took the train from Shanghai. It was a very comfortable ride. Always choose 'soft seat'! The price differential is meagre & traveling in China is relatively economical by world standard.

  • Nanjing boasts a highly developed transportation system with its own international airport, railway station and numerous bus stations.
    By train:
The newly renovated Railway station is located in the north of the city and the soft seat entrance is to the right of the station as you face it. Train tickets are available here, or at a ticket office near Gulou on Zhongshan Bei Lu. Most major hotels can can also get tickets for a small service charge. This is a good option as it is much easier than queuing up at the train station! Taxis to and from the train station to the center of town should cost about RMB 20-30. There are also buses to the University area around Shanghai Lu (no.13) or Xinjeikou (No. 1A) from outside the station. If you take train from Nanjing to Shanghai(3 hours),it costs you around RMB80,regarding to it's the fastest train,so the price is also the highest. Also, you can take buses. The buses themselves are generally good and a speedy bus service operates to Shanghai (3-4 hours), Suzhou (2 hours), and Hangzhou (5-6 hours).
Getting about in the city itself is usually pretty easy and there are ample taxis around town and a good (though crowded) bus service.

  • Some internal China flights as well as flight from Hong Kong use the local Nanjing International Airport. However, you may find yourself having to fly in and out of Shanghai if you are catching a direct connection elsewhere.
There are a ton of taxi's and they are quite reasonable. One of the few places I know where the taxis charge by distance, and not time. So if you are caught in a traffic jam, you can relax - you won't see the meter tick away...
