The Pub Bar: A Popular Place for Ex-pats

The Pub Bar

There are many Western style bars concentrated on Shi Qian Jie and I visited a couple of them. During my little bar hop I noticed that only two seemed rather busy. The first was the Pub Bar. This was a rather small place that was initially packed when I visited. I actually ate here which was something of a mistake. I had a very weak hamburger. Still the beer was good and they played the Rolling Stones on the stereo which is not something you hear often in China. I think the big turn off here was the fact that there were too many middle aged men entertaining themselves with very young Chinese women.

The cozy bar at Harry's - go early for a seat!

Harry's Bar - Two floors with bar and music downstairs and pool table upstairs. 55 channel Satellite TV carrying international sports games and news programs. Live music 6 nights a week (not on Sunday) from a 1st class Filipino trio. Music range is varied and includes many old time favorites from the 60s and 70s and also many new numbers. Harry's Bar is comfortable with a range of seating including bar stools, sofa lounge and high chairs by the window. The drink list includes a good selection of imported beers, Tiger Draft, imported wines and a complete range of spirits and ingredients for Harry's Cocktail Menu. Busy most nights after 9pm; especially busy Thursday to Saturday with a good crowd of worldly Suzhou locals and many foreigners (Germans, Americans, English, Irish and Australians!! Open until 3am; Sally (Queen of Suzhou) is the manager!

At some of the Gardens: Night Cultural performances

Fancy hearing a flute floating music across the garden lake reflecting the full foon.

Worth watching a night cultural performance at one of those organized at the Gardens. Include opera ballad singing, musical instruments like the pipa and flute, dancing. Tea and peanuts may be served. Some places even have a short wedding ceremony which can be hilarious if guests are invited to take part.

Of course, souvenirs and tea are on sale at the shops that are open before or after the shows.

Bars: Not all they seem!

Fancy a drink? Well there are loads of bars along Shiquan Street which should cater to your drinking needs. Also be aware that many of them have girls who aren't exactly waitresses!
