36 Pairs of Mandarin Ducks Hall by mke1963 The Humble Administrator's Garden was first created in 1513AD, on the site of a former monastery. The middle section is the only part which is truly in the southern China garden style, as the western part has been extensively remodelled and has strong Japanese influence, while the eastern part fell into disrepair and was only returned to being a garden in recent decades - and so looks more like a suburban park. In the central area there is a good museum of garden history although it is really a museum of Suzhou garden history and focuses on the Humble Administrator's Garden. For me, the star attraction must be the "36 Pairs of Mandarin Ducks Hall" with its beautiful views through the blue and plain chequered glass. The Humble Administrator's Garden is always busy, but the day I visited it was raining heavily and the flag-following groups kept moving fast, so there were spells when sections of the garden were quiet and undisturbed. The guestroom on the west side of the garden by we2364 There are two seperate gardens located inside which one couple lived here before. Ou in Chinese means lotus root and a couple can be also called in this way. Lotus roots is also a plant which can be hardly aparted with its threads connected, representing the love and emotion inseperable between couples. What a pretty pagoda by sugarpuff The pagoda is one of the first things you see when driving down into the main town from the train station. It towers over the main part of the city looking remarkable. It was firt built in the third century AD, and rebuilt in 1582. Eventhough the Pagoda only retains nine out of its original eleven storeys it still stands at 76m! Of course climbing it would give you a perfect view of the whole of Suzhou, but 'unfortunately' we arrived there too late...oh what a pity! I'll have to go back again one day to climb the NINE storeys!!! I dont think so!!!!! Luckily my mum was with me so I can use her as an excuse for not doing it....'you know, I didn't want to leave her there at the bottom waiting for me all alone...'! It's open from 8am-5pm and costs a mere 15yuan to get in. Leave a Comment Directions: A few minutes walk down Renmin Street.

by SLLiew This a very popular tourist destination, a few km outside of downtown Suzhou on a hill slope. There are cultural procession and performances and so if you stay long enough you will be able to enjoy them as they are repeated throughout the day. Their music and colorful costumes and the enthusiasm of the performers add color to this "tomb". Apparently, there is no attempt yet to open the tomb for fear that there is a bobby trap that will result in the collapse of the entire hill. Legend has it that the architect and all the builders of the tomb were given a feast after completion and poisoned so that their secrets of the tomb would never be known. ' So it was a nice climb up the hill but a bit ghastly after hearing that many innocent people have been killed by the King who built it.

by mke1963 The Hall of Ascending Cloud sits behind classical rockeries. This three-bay building was the owner's winter study, with his library above. Osmanthus, camellia, plum and maple trees in the coirtyard outside are almost guaranteed to provide a different scene almost every single day of the year. Note, in several pavilions and houses how the lines of sight are channelled through certain directions and through certain 'scenes' inside and out. Sometimes, the depth of field brings the scene closer, and at other times the design creates an illusion of great distance. A pond takes up much of the western part of the garden, with pavilions and walkways all around, each with a different purpose and with a different season or mood in mind. The lace-bark pine is a partiuclarly notable species - often found in Chinese gardens, but rarely so beautifully positioned as here. Perhaps the most famous courtyard is the Ming or Astor Court, reporduced in its entirety in New York's MoMA. Ironically, they first had to construct a prototype in Suzhou before reproducing it - again - in New York. Throughout the western half of the building, the designer was faced repeatedly with problems of vision and height: the many walls would loom over the courtyards and the gardens, if it were not for the masterful use of horizontal lines, doorways and even fake windows to reduce the height visually. The Garden of the Master of Nets is as much a form of art as a garden. Sadly the southern buildings are used as shops, selling artwork. The art is doubtlessly quite good, but it just seems so inappropriate to spoil the tranquility and style of one of the world's truly special gardens. Leave a Comment Address: 10 Shijin jie

'The photo does not do it justice'. by sugarpuff “In heaven there is paradise. On earth there are Suzhou and Hangzhou". The gate is the only surviving one of the eight that once surrounded Suzhou. Inside is a beautiful garden (the Sheraton Hotel actually looks out onto it!),and a big lake with typical Suzhou-esque buildings everywhere. Leave a Comment Directions: In the far southwestern corner of the moated area.

A best view inside by we2364 It is the largest garden in Suzhou which was built in the 15th century. It was the apartment of a poet, a politian, a governor and more others. Many builds were destoried before and re-constructed. It is the one represents the best of ancient Chinese architecture combing with art, construction, stone, water, craving, outline and more. Since 1997, this garden becomes the world culture heritage. Leave a Comment

How many qi paos could you make a day using this? by sugarpuff For just 7yuan entrance fee, I could tell I was going to like this place straight away!!!! Our taxi driver had some difficulties finding the main entrance, why I don't know as it was pretty obvious! It's quite a good museum because everything is clearly marked in Chinese and English making the whole tour more enjoyable. It starts with the legendary inventor of silk, Lei Zu who was the concubine of the equally lengendary Emperor Huang Di.It starts back in 4000BC up to the present showing reproductions of early silk patterns as well as pieces of the real McCoy! There were silk making machines with demonstrators ready to show you how they were used. Cor blimey...you couldn't have a shaky hand working with that equipment! The most interesting and also at the same time quite repulsive part of it all is the last room where you can see literally hundreds of silkworms munching away on mulberry leaves whilst spinning cocoons! Yuck!!!! It sent shivers down my spine! Leave a Comment Address: 661 Renmin Street, Suzhou.Directions: Virtually opposite the North Temple Pagoda.
