In addition to its gardens, Suzhou is famed for its gardens and you can book a boat ride on one of them. Though the commentary is all in mandarin, its still an interesting way to see the city from the water and waterside dwellings for which the city is known.

  • Hairy Crab Galore!

One of the most famous, and possibly the most famous, food in Suzhou is the Hairy Crabs, characterized by short dark hairs around their claws. Because of that, sometimes these crabs are called Mittens Crabs (because the hairs around their claws look like mittens). These are fresh water crabs that are only available in October/November each year....

Taxis are abundant and cheap and are a fast and easy way to get around the city. There are also rickshaws for hire as well. But these are good only for shorter distances. Suzhou Warnings and Dangers

  • by wtrvlr Written Nov 18, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There's a small family-owned restaurant across from the Humble Administrator's Garden called Ya Du. Beware of the old woman who runs this restaurant. Our family went to have lunch in this establishment. After we ordered our food, she asked us if we would like to have LongJin Tea. We asked her how much the tea will be (in Mandarin) and she pretended not to understand the question. After a few minutes of her playing dumb, we decided to go with her suggestion. Each of us received a small cup of watered-down tea. When the bill arrived, we were shocked that she charged 25RMB per cup. When we protested, she claimed that the 'manager' set the price. By then, she was lucid and communicative. The money is not the issue. It was the deception from this old woman that left a bitter taste in an otherwise wonderful visit to Suzhou.

The Pan Men Scenic Area is considered one of the most important attractions in Suzhou but for me it was much to do about nothing. It is essentially a large pond surrounded by over restored or rebuilt pavilions that have been turned into souvenir shops.

Unique Suggestions: The complex grounds have two historical attractions of note of which I have provided separate tips, the Ruiguang Pagoda and the Pan Men Gate. Kids also seem to have a great time feeding the large schools of goldfish.

I haven't seen anyone mentioning the night clubs in China! There are many really good night clubs here, with cheap drinks! MUCH cheaper than in Shanghai, and I've never experienced having to pay entrance fee here. If you wanna go to the must popular place amongst at least Westerners, tell the taxi driver "Ligongdi" and go to Scarlet or Pravda for a good night out! :)
