No.1 Water Country of China

Zhouzhuang Town,Once called Zhenfengli,is located in Kunshan City ,30km to The Southeast of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province covering an area of 0.4 Sq.km.

Bridge Water and house

Zhouzhuang is well known for its beautiful environment and simple architecture Although more than 900 years have past, its architectural style is still well preserved ,More than 60 percent of the residential houses were built during the Ming (1368-1644)and Qing(1644-1911) dynasties, consisting of nearly 100 classic courtyards and 60 carved brick archways.

A township on water

The most interesting travel route is walking along the banks or rowing a boat Through the stone arch bridges to view the residential houses along the waterside. The houses commonly have two floors, with white walls and black roofs ,various styles of windows out of which often poke many bamboo poles carrying the household laundry. The local people use the water to do their washing, and also do their shopping by lowering a pole with a basket on the end to the vendors sitting in their boats. Along the roads, there are various forms of stone blocks every 10 meters for the boats stop

Suzhou -- the Lion Forest Garden

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

wwliu 134 reviews

Compactly yet harmoniously spaced, the Lion Forest Garden has a prominent part for series of man-made mountains with various buildings around the lake, and an artificial waterfall and cliffs at the edge of the lake on the west. Remains of the 14th century man-made mountains, covering 1,152 sq.m. and being the largest of all at Suzhou, can be still seen today. Noted for its labyrinthine mountains with winding pathways and caverns, old pines and cypress trees, awesome peaks and jogged rocks of grotesque shapes resembling dancing lions with striking and unusual poses, it possesses with pride the true delights of mountain and forest scenery in limited space with a flavor of Zen Buddhism.

Paparazzi on gondolas

A gondola ride along the canal is a good way to see the town. It costs 60 RMB per gondola in Tong Li (max. 6 person, excluding children) and 80 RMB in Zhou Zhuang (max. 8 person). If you don't want to pay for the whole gondola, just chip in and ride with fellow tourists if your group is under the max. number.

Tip: Try to get a female gondola rower, there more likely to sing traditional Wu-dialect songs during the ride.

Nanjing, the 'southern capital', once was the Replic of China's capital after World War II. Besides Dr. Sun Zhongshan's maoseleum, a must-see, the city used to be the 'greeniest' among all Chinese cities.

It has a long history as well, onced to be an ancient capital for a short while. More later.

Wu Xi/Lake Tai Hu

Lake Tai Hu used to be a very beautiful place, and I liked it better than Suzhou. However, for past several years, they built several theme parks along the lake, which I think totally ruined the peace and the charm of it.

Before many people can afford to fly and/or drve their own cars, Lake Taihu used to be Shanghai people's weekend/recreation/honeymoon place. The Shanghai tourists also jumped up the local prices.
