    Local Train travel

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I took the train from Shanghai to Nanjing & then revert back east to Wuxi. It's a comfortable ride.

A word of caution for traveling on trains in China. The train station is usually quite crowded with mainly local travelers. Try to travel light as this is the MOST POPULATED country in the world, hence, when I said crowded, I mean CROWDED! Also, train stations in main cities are huge, so one has lots of distance to cover. However, you can actually hire someone to carry your bags for you (bargain!) right to your seat for a small fee. Most importantly, try to buy your ticket a few days before actual traveling.

The fastest overland transport to get to Wuxi from cities in the surrounding area would be D train.
Wuxi is about 1 hour from Shanghai, about 20 mins from Suzhou and 1.5 hours from Nanjing.
From Hangzhou, D train is also the fastest option, but there're only about 2 departures daily, so you might be better off taking a bus; other slower trains will take 4-6 hours for the journey.
Between Wuxi and Beijing, the best options are the overnight D trains (2 departures daily, 9 hours journey time) but these can be expensive if you're on a backpacker's budget. Slower and cheaper are the overnight T trains (also 2 departures daily) which take about 12 hours.

    Taxi

by mychina Written May 14, 2007

Wuxi taxi drivers normally don't speak English. If you meet one who does then you are really lucky. In downtown there is no difficulty to find a cab except when it's raining, then it can be very tricky. Drivers are volontarily using the meter so you don't need to bargain the tariff. Basic Fee is 8+1 RMB per 3 km. Although the meter starts at 8 RMB there is a fuel surcharge of 1 RMB that you have to pay for the ride. You can get a receipt (fapiao) if you ask for it. The taxis are a little bit old fashioned compared to Shanghai, most of them are older Santana's or Jetta's - but that's still ok in comparison to other more rural areas in China.

    Wuxi Airport!

by mychina Updated Sep 8, 2007
At the Airport - Welcome to Wuxi

Yes, Wuxi has an airport and the connections are growing! The airport is located about 20km eastwards in the New District next to the village of Shuofang, not far from the City Limits to Suzhou. Count about 50 - 60 RMB from the airport (Wuxi fei ji chang) to Downtown (shi qu) by taxi or take the airport bus which stops downtown opposite the railway station. You can buy tickets for Shenzhen Airlines (flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Kunming ...) in the ticket office attached to Sheraton Hotel in Wuxi downtown or for any other airline in a local travel agency.
