I was overwhelmed by the touristy nature of yangshuo, but fortunately lucked out by finding a great tour guide by the name of Maria who took me on a great bike tour of the countryside... her english was great and she accomodated my request to not do the typical touristy tour, but to see how the local people live.
It was a great bike ride along country lanes where I saw the harvesting of rice and actually got to do some harvesting myself. The scenery is spectacular in this area of the world... and wandering around in the backroads knows very well) was a real treat.
If you want a great relaxing ride, try a bike tour with a guide like Maria... there's no way I could have ever found the roads and turns that Maria knew about.
