As far as crowded Chinese cities go, Zhangjiagang is a great place for bike riding for fitness and transportation. As a model city, Zhangjiagang's streets are wide with defined bike lanes, many of which are separated from vehicle traffic by medians. Good bicycles can be had inexpensively (from about USD 20, more for a mountain bike) at any of the many bicycle shops along ChangAn Lu, or Da Run Fa (the RT Mart) shopping center. The city center is flat and compact, so a bike is an excellent means of transportation for shopping or sightseeing, and a great way to burn a few calories. As in every city in China people drive like lunatics, so caution is always a must.
Don't wanna buy a bike? Taxis are readily available and inexpensive. You can go most anywhere in the city center for the equivalent of $1. Minimum fare in Zhangjiagang is 7 rmb (about $.88) compared with 11 rmb ($1.38) in Shanghai.
The city also has a dependable bus system that links Zhangjiagang to numerous surrounding towns.

A beautiful, clean, peaceful and quiet city. Not many foreigners here, most of them are english teacher or Korean. Many of locals don't speak english which make it difficult for foreigners to live in....
