Various traditional ancient Chinese crafts are being preserved at Zhouzhuang. Within the old town, there is a mock-up of an ancient wine distillery where you can see how Chinese rice wine was fermented and bottled into porcelain bottles. You can sit down for a cup of Chinese wine at RMB 5 per cup.

When in Venice, a gondola ride is a must-do. When in Zhouzhuang, you should likewise take a boat ride through the canals of this ancient town to admire the old buildings, willow trees and bridges that span the canals. A 20-minute ride on a boat costs RMB80 and it can take up to 8 people.

The best and cheapest way to visit Zhouzhuang would be to join a day-tour organised by a local Shanghai tour agent. There are numerous tour agents in Shanghai offering day-tours to Zhouzhuang catering to the domestic Chinese market. The prices are very reasonable. I paid RMB 120 for a full day tour of Zhouzhuang which includes the admission fee of RMB 100. The tour bus will pick you up from your hotel in downtown Shanghai at 0730 hours and will return to the hotel around 1800 hours. Lunch is an extra RMB 20 in a local restaurant in Zhouzhuang.
The tour is conducted in Mandarin and is suitable if you can speak and understand Mandarin. The agent that I used was Shanghai Gongxiao Travel Service Co Ltd located at the southern concourse of the Shanghai Railway Station at 702, Hengfeng Road. Call the 24-hour hotline to make your reservation. Payment is made when you board the tour bus.
