The Gloria Plaza Hotel in Nanchang is like a thousand other 4 star hotels in China (actually I think...more
Modern Chinese food presented in a Western way. A little more expensive than your average Chinese meal but good to suit tastes which are both Asian and non-Asian, a meeting place of friends. A delicious and fun-filled meal for four came in beneath a meal for two at some Western restaurants so good value for money here. An open kitchen allows you a...more
There is a beautiful street in keeping with the Song Dynasty characteristics of the city wall and gates around the central areas. Well kept and far better constructed than many of the modern builds within the city, this lane is a must see if you are in Ganzhou for any length of time. Easily found and walkable from the Wenqing Lu area of the city...more
China is full of fakes. Look out for fake brands, out of date products and people/things pretending they are something they are not. Keep your wits about you and if it seems too good to be true then it probably is.'Shānzhài' is a term that refers to fake brands and imitation products (particularly electrical goods).more
Ganzhou has a somewhat hilly terrain. Slopes and bridges and where there are not, there are stairs. The escalators in the train station are rarely in order and the whole station area is undergoing a pretty substantial facelift this year (early 2013). Needless to say, it's not great laden with suitcases so I suggest heading to the bus station or...more
The border crossing at the Friendship bridge is an interesting experience. It takes some time though so be aware that you could be standing for at least a couple of hours. The first step is to go down to the Chinese side at 9.30am although it's probably best to line up early so you are first in line. After being pushed and shoved by hundreds of...more
It is a long day if you do it like us and drove from Tingri to Zhangmu (around 10 hours). The scenery is spectacular though so it's barable!! Be aware at the moment (I travelled in May) that the road between Nyalum and Zhangmu is closed certain times of the day and if you travel in those times you could be stuck for up to 4 hours as there is major...more
Be careful in Nyalum as there is a major concentration of beggers there as it is purely a tourist town and stopping point. They will surround your car before you get out so be careful with your things and money and if you decide to give to anyone, make sure you have enough because you'll be mobbed!!more
Remeber to cut the price anytime if you are a self-aided traveler and not rich enough to be cheated again and again.Of course China is not a country full of cheating and tricks,I can understand well that people need your money to support their family. But the problem is efficient managing in this field still lacks so far. Brocade ValleyThree-step...more
No.15 Dayueshan Road, Lushan, China, 332900, CN
Generally speaking, transportation on Lushan is better than other famous mountains in China.Main roads and stone paths are built and maintained well. But take care when you walk downwards on stone paths. The taxi on Lushan is very expensive. You must cut the price with the driver. Xiu Feng and Bailudong Shuyuan are in the south of Lushan. If you want...more
To give you an idea, of how important Jingdezhen has been in former time, I copied this receent article from China Daily:"Archaeologists have discovered two important sites during an excavation of an imperial kiln at Jingdezhen, a city renowned for its porcelain since the Song Dynasty (960-1279) in South China's Jiangxi Province. The excavation of...more
No.1051 Cidu Avenue, Changjiang District, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, 333000, China
Good for: Couples
I was there one February - I dont think it is usual for the Li River to ever freeze unlike the Songhua river where I went in far north China where winter is usually extreme such as minus 30.
It was cold but not particularly cold, a lot milder the more south you go - but it was a time of year that I was aware to be adaptable - and it was raining when I got to Guilin so I went to Yangshuo by minibus as wouldnt have seen anything if had gone by boat - and didnt do a river cruise when I got there as the weather was quite changeable. I did have a great time though having hired a man and moped to take me to Moon Hill and glow worm caves and surrounds - I walked up there in semis wet weather etc and booked him again to take me around Fuli and so on the next day, the places that run along the Li River so I still got to see the famous stunning scenery that you would see from a boat cruise. The weather was nicely fine that day but I was in a hurry to get back to see a bit of Guilin and catch a plane so hired a taxi - price was reasonable -.so there are a few options for getting between Guilin and Yangshuo.
The Lonely Planet guidebook was my bible for travelling around on my own around China and have just bought their beautiful new updated edition which I would of course recommend/wouldnt travel China myself without it....
I would go back in spring, summer or autumn though to do the Li river by boat whenever I get the chance again.Related to:
