The border crossing at the Friendship bridge is an interesting experience. It takes some time though so be aware that you could be standing for at least a couple of hours.
The first step is to go down to the Chinese side at 9.30am although it's probably best to line up early so you are first in line. After being pushed and shoved by hundreds of tourists for an hour you finally make it to immigration and then customs. After that you have to drive around 4km to the actual friendship bridge. There are heaps of porters there who can help you carry your bags for the 1km walk if you need as well.
It is then around 1km that you have to carry your bags across the bridge to the Nepalese side for immigration and visas before the whole ordeal is over.
It's a long day, but with the 2 1/4 time difference you get some extra time in the day when you reach Nepal.

It is a long day if you do it like us and drove from Tingri to Zhangmu (around 10 hours). The scenery is spectacular though so it's barable!!
Be aware at the moment (I travelled in May) that the road between Nyalum and Zhangmu is closed certain times of the day and if you travel in those times you could be stuck for up to 4 hours as there is major road works going on.
We were stuck for 2 hours while they blew up rocks on the road, but with the view and the comfort of the car (or wandering around the road looking at the rainforest) kept us occupied for most of the time.
