This beer brand is Haden beer, from a Danish-Chinese partnership. Northeastern China beers in general tends to be less bitter and easy to drink if you are not a heavy drinker. Changchun Nightlife

  • Live music and film posters

The Ferry Port Bar is a local neighborhood bar in the Guilin Lu area. The decor is pretty interesting--some of the walls are covered in small film posters ranging from your usual Hollywood films to more obscure, independent films. Towards the front of the bar the tables have swings suspended on ropes. This is a pretty good place to grab a mug of...

  • Have a Corona, enjoy the band

The San Marco bar became my goto spot after the Mayflower closed for renovations. The friendly, talented Phillipine band played music that got the crowd on its feet and even allowed an amateur like myself to join them for a song. The staff was friendly(after my departure I still exchange emails with several of them) and responsive. It is definitely...

  • Bowling with friends

This could be as well in the sports section, but it happens to be a nice tip when you live in a city with temperatures below -20C (-5F) in the winter. There's not much to do... and an evening of bowling seems to be at least "warming".

  • Bus

A very cheap way to get around in Changchun is by bus (only 1 yuan per ride). However, this works best if you can read Mandarin and are a bit familiar with the city. You could try to ask other people to help you choose which bus to take, but I wouldn't recommend that. Just as with taxi's you never have to wait long for a bus; if you miss one, the...

Changchun Warnings and Dangers

  • Changchun Road Killers

Changchun, the city of auto, has a large number of cars runing on the street and a large number of dangerous drivers too. The texi drivers in Changchun do not like to step the brake and rush to the walkers on the road as if they did not see them. The new drivers always zigzag on the road and scare you anytime, anyplace. So, walking in changchun,...

Changchun What to Pack

  • ahoerner's Profile Photo

by ahoerner Written Jun 13, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Nice, western-like shoes are difficult to find here to... if you find them, they will probably cost you much more than the extra kilos in your luggage.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Deos are hard to find in Changchun. So if you plan to stay here some time either for business or for tourism, consider the idea of bringing enough deodorant.

As the weather is too dry, consider also the extra luggage on hand and body lotions (if you are a woman)... bring some lotion for your skin if you are a man too... believe me!

Photo Equipment: For sure... You can always buy the latest digital camera in one of the electronics shopping malls all over the town.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring them as well... there are outdoor activities, mainly in the summer.
