Benxi has many underground markets which are massive and easy to get lost and wander around in for hours. Look out for steps heading underground around the railway station. They're a great place to head to in winter when it's freezing cold outside.
What to buy: Anything cheap and cheerful especially clothes and shoes are in massive supply. Just remember you get what you pay for! You can also get your nails painted for 5rmb, have some photos taken, buy DVDs for 6rmb (you can ask the sellers to play the DVDs to check they are OK before you buy) and buy jewellery/mobile phone accessories etc etc. Snack food and bottled drinks are also sold.
What to pay: Bargain hard down here on clothes and shoes and jewellery, offer at least 50% less than what the seller asks for... and don't pay any more than you think it's worth.
ChangJiang & DaShang: Nice Big Supermarkets
Yeah, what makes it special... ha ha! that it's almost like a Western supermarket in Benxi. Clean, big and carry some imported goods... but don't get too excited...
What to buy: Great Wall Dry Wine at 28rmb or 58rmb. They also stock some Western beers/largers. Ready roasted chickens are good and the meat here is refridgerated. (I'd never buy fruit or vegetables from a supermarket though, the markets are brilliant here.) Sweet chilli sauce...mmmm. Razor blades and shaving gel/foam, but NO deoderant! Changjiang sells tampons, the only place in Benxi that does.
What to pay: Dashang is the slightly cheaper of the two.
