Zongshan Square is clearly the place to be during the hot summer evenings. If it is still a pace of subtel pilgrimage during the daytime, at night the big circular area surrounding the Great Chairman is packed with Shenyang people of al ages just relaxing.
A wide circuit is paced by the rollerbladers, while the entrances are jamed with badminton playing grandmothers. People kick balls and shuttlecocks around. Others sit on the ground chatting. This mass of Mao-ignoring humanity stays until the early hours of the morning, enjoying the cool night air. In many cities, these people would find themselves down at the river bank, but this is Shenyang and the river smells sobad that the bridges curl up at the edges.

I suppose it is a bit tacky to recommend an Irish Bar in Shenyang, especially given that this is no more Irish than the thousands of Irish bars in every city around the world.
It did strike me that someone somewhere is making a fortune supplying these pubs with Irish memorabilia.
The live music was enthusiastic, if somewhat predictable - plenty of Mandopop, M2M and Celine Dion (Pity she wasn't on the ship when it went down).
A friendly local crowd make up for the tables of sullen expatriates shouting poor English at waiting staff who speak better English and are more polite.
The pub shows Formula 1 when it is on: whether this is an attraction or a reason to avoid the place is up to you.
They do a buffet on Saturday nights (and possibly some other nights as well)

These two bars are often mentioned in the same breath because they are located within sight of each other and they appeal to the same crowd. Many foreign teachers and other ex-pats hang out at these bars, though Chinese frequent the bars, too. Beer costs 10 kuai at both places. These bars hold parties on international holidays, and might be the most festive places in Shenyang on Halloween.

Not as interesting as Zhong Jie, but there're more street hawkers here in the evening. In winter it shuts relatively early -- we went around 2200 and there was almost nothing left.
