The old terminal at Shenyang Airport stands, forlorn, alongside the vast new terminal. You know its an airport terminal only because of the big signs: there are few aircraft to give the game away. It's another terminal in which you can see the curvature of the earth along the departure lounge and the baggage carousels.
On arrival, fights break out among taxi-drivers for your custom. I had to wait and watch two taxi-drivers punching and grappling with each other to see who was going to take me the 20km into town. It was an odd, primitive form of free-market capitalism. Thank God Shenyang taxi drivers aren't armed, or there would be a lot of burials at the airport.

This is the Monument of 'September 18th Incident'. Shenayang was attacked by Japanese armies on September 18,1931 and this is the monument to that event. When I was here I cried for the world peace...the most difficult thing to obtain in the world

If you are just leaving or arriving in Shenyang, a very convenient place to stock up on travel groceries is the Carrefour just down the street. You can find the Carrefour by turning left as you leave the train station and walking about one city block and then turning right. The huge store will be on your right side. It is not directly on the street you are walking on (bei zhan lu) but it should be visible behind some buildings. You are very close if you see the building that looks like a coin.
This Carrefour has a McDonalds and a Pizza Hut, if you are in need of a Western food fix (the train station also has a McDonalds).

To get to the city from the airport your two main options are taking a taxi or catching the airport bus.
The taxi will cost at least 60-100 yuan (around US $7.50-$12.50) depending on your destination and bargaining ability. If you walk out to the highway you might find a cheaper ride, but you also might be waiting for a while. From the airport to a train station my guess is that you would be hard pressed to get a ride cheaper than 80 kuai (though I haven't made this ride).
The airport bus found parked outside the terminal is a fine alternative, costing a mere 10 yuan (US $1.25) to take you across the river into the city. The bus drops you off on a busy street where taxis are plentiful. The bus leaves when it is full, so it is most convenient at a time when many flights are arriving.

Taxi fare starts at 7 RMB. It seems that no matter where we went, it was no more than 9. Taxi drivers were friendly and understanding about my two year old daughter wanting to climb in by herself and asking non stop questions.
