John195123 Says:  The few rooms of this 20yuan/person/night are clean enough to crash for the night, but nothing to write home about. If the main hotel, just across the square from the train station is closed, this one should be open. The people who run it are friendly and should get you...

Williebobs Says:  With all the rules, this was the first we found that would have us so here we stayed. TV, ensuite, breakfast included (and a very strange one at that!) and good location. And it was under 6 pounds for the double room (90RMB) - we asked for a discount.

Not for the faint hearted initially, but really very good. A kind of smoked meat butchers (and the butcher was smoking).

Favorite Dish: Point to a nice looking piece of the ham/pork and he'll chop it to pieces, add garlic, soya beans, chilli etc etc and pop it in a bag with chopsticks (about 10-15RMB). Get some of the delicious fresh bread from the stall to the right and back to the hotel for a really good feed. Popped back a couple of times and wasn't at all unwell afterwards, which is generally a good sign!

Tourist Traps

C.I.T.S. ... is a trap

This trap is worst. How worst ?

Our first plan was to do an overland trip from Lanzhou to Golmud and than agin from Golmud by bus to Lhasa and than crossing the border into Nepal but later this trap screwed us up. The CITS charge us 3400 yuan for the package group travel, this amount didn't include accomodation to Nepal border, which mean we have to pay more than that depends on how they arrange their traps. good luck. At last we turn back North to Dunhuang....forget Lhasa.

Favorite thing: What a strange place. 25 hour sleeper bus journey from Lhasa and here we were. Freezing when we left Lhasa but boy was it hot when we arrived in Golmud. There is a sign here which says, 'Top Tourist City in China'. However, we found no one who spoke English (although everyone was very helpful) and nothing of interest (although there is a huge potash plant just outside the city: see it from the train east from Golmud to Xining).
