The best way to eat in China is to hit all the local spots! China is about the culture and mystery so if you spot a place with a long line jump in and ask for what the last guy ordered! The language barrier was a constant reminder that i should have planned better, but I had fun eating things iIhad no clue as to what they were! (I ate jelly fish thinking it was chicken!)
Obviously some places you know from books, etc, have the items youve longed to try, like dumplings, peking duck, tea houses, etc. They are worth a try and they are sure to fulfill that hunger!
Street food is still my favorite! dont know why, but its so much fun eating out of a plastic bag on the go!

The beloved revolutionary Chinese leader inspired this venue in the district of Dongcheng, Dongguan, Guangdong.
His statue welcomes the patrons who will enjoy Sichuan-style cuisine which includes spicy hot recipes. The thick menu has photos of the dishes which can certainly help selecting for those, like me, who can't otherwise have language clues. My table companions ordered a number of dishes to be shared and everything was delicious - like most other restaurants I've tried in the area.
Being greeted at the entrance by the golden half-figure of Mao Tse Dong is anyway an experience by itself.
I'll try to figure out the address to share!

A place out of the ordinary. Maybe a litle prepare for foreigners, but still in chinese style. Excellent food and still cheap for western wallets. 2 persons can hardly spend more than 250 RMB for a full dinner.
Favorite Dish: Too hard to tell.........the answer would be several

We bought a delicious pork pancake for just US 8 cts in Dalien and it was enough for both of us. In restaurants beers cost half that of Coke. You must try the famous Tsingtao beer first brewed by the German colonials. Trust the Germans to seek and brew from China's best source of drinking water: the Laoshan Mountains. Skewered lamb is also a popular snack at just US 10 cts each. Hygiene has improved vastly although some weaker stomachs may still need getting use to.
Favorite Dish: Try Beijing's famous Qing dishes such as dumplings and BBQ meat.

this place is heaven in shanghai, modest and plain from the outside but a haven from the hustle and bustle on the inside. so relaxing with an earthly elegence.
the coffee isn't real hot but it has a lot of flavour. true to the meaning of paying for the experience and ambience.
it is small and cosy and intimate....you'll forget where you are.
buy the english shanghai daily newspaper from the magazine stand near by and relax :-)
shhhhhh you'll want to keep this place a secret ;-)
Favorite Dish: the ambience

These are popping up all over the world but have the most amazing pork dumplings with broth in them. They are so delicious I go to Din Tai Fung if I'm in any city which has one. Soooo yummy.
Favorite Dish: Xiao Long Bao - Shanghainese pork dumplings with pork broth inside. Be careful when you bite into them because the broth can burn your mouth.

This is a tiny place that has enough terrific food that you may have trouble fitting out the door when you leave. The place is two stories, not much in the way of decor, but who cares when the food is this delicious? I wasn't paying a lot of attention to anything other than what was being delivered to my table.
We were a group of 6 and it took a lot of discussion before we finally settled on a few things and shared. We got beef and peppers, Shanghai style mini pork dumplings (xiao long bao), rice, and "tasty chicken." That was the English translation on the menu. It's a chicken dish that comes in an old-style wooden bowl (more on that later).
The menu translations leave a lot to be desired and the staff speak no English but you can fumble around and do all right, I think, just by pointing. The only problems could be if something unexpected arises. We got everything we ordered except the chicken and when we tried to inquire as to what happened to the chicken we didn't really make ourselves understood nor did we understand what they were trying to tell us. The chicken eventually arrived, however, so I guess it just takes a little longer to cook. It's worth the wait, though, believe me.
The cost for 6 people was unbelieably inexpensive so if you're traveling on a budget but would like to experience a night out on the town in Shanghai, this would be a terrific spot to have dinner and feel like you splurged.
Favorite Dish: The beef & peppers were terrific. The xiao long bao was out of this world. The tasty chicken though? More than just tasty and that's putting it mildly. As I said at the table, as I went in for my 3rd serving, "I want to marry this."
The chicken dish is basically some small pieces of chicken (bone in) cooked in a sauce that has garlic and, as near as we could tell, peanut oil. Beyond that, we're not entirely sure, but it's just a gorgeous experience for your mouth.
Some hints - don't use the chopsticks on the chicken. Just pick it up and eat it with your fingers. Then, take the ladel and spoon some of the sauce into the bowl that has your plain rice in it. Mix it all around and enjoy. It's FANTASTIC. The sauce isn't overly sweet but it's not bitter. The garlic isn't overwhelming. It's a great blend of flavors you're probbably familiar with and some new tastes for you.
