Walk the walls of the city, great for photos.
The Ming Dynasty Wall
This was built between 1374 and 1378 during the reign of Emperor Hongwu. It is a castle-like construction very typical of all China’s ancient city walls. It is a grand and impressive structure from a feudal society which shows the engineering skills of ancient China. It is 14 kilometres long and 12 metres high. The wall is about 18 metres wide at its base. The wall has towers at the four gates and corners and it formed a strong defence for the city inside.

Built during the Ming Dynasty. We entered the wall through the south gate. You can take your photo with the soldiers.

These are the views you get from the South Gate. You get a good view along the city wall plus to the north towards the Bell Tower.

Enclosing the old city, most of the wall is in good condition. We visited in late afternoon on a cold December day, still a good walk, views over the city excellent.

West Gate of City Wall

Originally built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), this wall is about 9 miles square. We climbed to the top of the wall at the West Gate. The gate itself is very impressive.
