Good local food at reasonable budget prices.
Favorite Dish: Stir-fried li3 ji1 shreds (chao3 li3 ji1 si1, 18 RMB): one of the dishes that you'll see on every table in this restaurant, very tender shreds of meat.
Pu3 cai4 (a kind of vegetable) in milky broth (nai3 tang1 pu3 cai4, 14 RMB): a traditional Shandong dish that's now rarely seen in restaurants.
Fish slices in vinegary sauce (zao1 liu1 yu2 pian4, 18 RMB): tasty fish dish with a sauce that's yummy with plain rice. My travel partner almost ordered another bowl of rice just to go along with the sauce!

The deco is contemporary Asian. From the outside the Chinese characters shao shan chong perch above the roof. So you can't miss it.
Menu in Chinese only. Don't just get frustrated because the names are all accompanied with pictures of the dishes. Well, then again, you might say with the Chinese skills in slicing cutting and marinating you can never tell what it is just just by looking at the dish.
Favorite Dish: Whatever food you eat in Jinan, expect it to be extremely salty. So ask the waitress that you want less salt in your food.
Order the pickled chilli pepper steam fishhead. It's Hunan signature dish. RMB38 each.
And black bean chicken in a wooden bucket.
And lotus root soup.
And rice of course, but if you can be a little creative by order noodle and eat that with the gravy of the steam fishhead.
The dishes are huge. 3 dishes are more than enough for 4 people.

You get good double-boiled soup, and glutinous rice & chicken wrapped in lotus leaves.
Typical fast-food setting. A few chicks and ducks and char-xiu hang by the display window.
All dishes are meant to serve an obese American - HUGE. Order the soup of the day for RMB12 and it is more than enough to feed 4 people.
Favorite Dish: Soup.

The chicken rice is close to the version we get at home (ie Malaysia).
The mince meat noodle soup is superb.
The ice kacang is lousy thought, the shaved ice is not nearly fine enough.
But to sum it up, If you misse Malaysian/Singaporean food, go there.
Favorite Dish: Mince meat noodle soup, but I have not tried all the dishes yet.

We were glad to discover Jenny's Cafe in Jinan. Hidden behind shades that shield the ground from the scorching heat meanwhile filling the whole place with greenery, it is not the most conspicuous. Luckily the signboard perched above the shop is huge enough. It occupies two shop fronts, and has a frontyard allowing alfresco dining.
Inside is most amazing. The place is decorated like an american sit-com home. Teddy bears sit at some of the tables. You can join them of course. There is even one room with antique Chinese dining furniture.
While most restaurants in China do not care if their dining guests are in there to sample the food or to slowly die from second-hand smoking, this restaurant DOES. It has got a NON-SMOKING section.
Favorite Dish: The chips are great.
The Italian tomato soup.
The salad with balsamic vinegar.
All are good, I suppose.

In the streets leading north from the southern moat, there are a succession of streets selling all kinds of excellent street food. I stuffed myself for around 10 kuai. As good as the food in Xi'an's Muslim quarter!
Favorite Dish: Just about anything.
