Fondest memory: Qingdao and its vicinity by the Yellow Sea offers a lot of great beach opportunities. There are lots of beaches open to the public for recreation. There are some in town and some on the road to the Laoshan scenic area. The sands here are not very white though. Beach volleyball, swimming, surfing, etc. can be done here.

Fondest memory: Laoshan is unique because it is adjacent to the coast, providing a beautiful sight of mountains and sea. It was fun climbing Laoshan mountain -- the stairs never ended. There were souvenir and refreshment stands all along the way, so it was like shopping while mountain climbing. Most people would get tired when they got to the top. There was a nice waterfall there. There were also lots of people offering sedan chair service for around 30 yuan to those who couldn't climb; many elderlies took advantage of this.

Favorite thing: Picture from the kitchen balcony of my first apartment in Qingdao. This is the location of the Qingdao International Beer Festival. The place is abandoned for 11 months out of the year only to open for one or two over-indulgent weeks. If you go with some chinese friends, be very careful, when some folks say ganbei (bottoms up) they really mean it. Pitcher after pitcher of every color beer and karaoke to boot can lead to trouble.

Favorite thing: Take a trip to see Laoshan mountain. The scenery is beautiful and although it's gotten a little gaudy like many of the Chinese tourist sites, it's 100% worth the trip. You'll pass along the way little fishing villages and meet really interesting people. If you're lucky the tour will stop at a Taoist temple on the ocean - absolutely breathtaking.
Fondest memory: I loved being the only western tourists in the city. Plus since my friend and I were (and still are) female and were traveling alone everyone went out of their way to make sure everything was ok and to help us out. They even helped us cross the streets, thinking we were completely helpless.
