  • Best Buffet I know of in Shanghai

The Yi Cafe has a great ambiance and food selections from all over the world (e.g. seafood, southeast Asian, Western, Indian, and of course Chinese). There is a huge variety and the food quality is exquisite. The buffet compares with other 5-star buffets in Shanghai like the Westin and Portman buffets, and I think may be slightly better. At about...

  • *good* American diner food

This is the best place I know of for comfort food in Shanghai, and they have a branch in Pudong! The menu includes all the diner favorites: all day breakfasts, burgers, grilled cheese, ice cream and pies, and lots of other items like taco salad, petc. Entrees range between RMB 35-60. They bring you free popcorn too :). THEY SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH HERE...

  • Gemran beer and restaurant

This is an enjoyable restaurant and bar. Nice atmosphere, REAL German beer. I usually go just for the beer and get snacks like fries and pretzels. The food is not great value for money, but the beer is - ESPECIALLY if you for the happy hour from 4-7pm. Beers are half price then, so you can get 1 leter like I'm enjoying in the picture for RMB 58...

  • Cheap food in basement of Jinmao Tower

If you are visiting the Jinmao Tower and hungry, you may want to try one of the various restaurants on the "B1" level. One section is a Chinese cafeteria style where you select your meats and veggies from among various choices. The bowls/containers are color coded to indicate price (but note that they are all just shads of grey, so you have to look...

  • Inexpensive Japanese Food in Pudong

Itoya has at least 10 stores scattered around Shanghai, but this is the only one I know of in Pudong. If you're in the mood for Japanese, you should try this place after a visit to the Jinmao Tower or Pearl Tower. The food is authentic and presented nicely. Set meals include desert and coffee or tea after the meal.Watch out for the lunchtime rush....

  • Zoes Caf?

This is a good place to go if you want a sandwhich, pasta or salad. Most entrees are about 40 RMB. They also have smoothies and deserts. The cheesecake is quite good. Because it's a cafe, the setting is laid back and relaxing. You can stop in just for a drink or smoothie, or for a full meal. Zoe's is located inside the superbrand mall, so you can...

  • Authentic Shanghaiese Food

This is a good place to go for authentic and upscale Shanghaiese food. There are a lot of exotic items on the menu (from a Western's standpoint), i.e. you can order one chicken's foot for each diner, and everyone will have it served in gravy on a full sized plate. This might not sound appetizing, but it is a delicacy in China, and it is fun to try...

  • Good Dim Sum

Paradise Garden is located on the 6th (top) floor of the J-Life Building, which is an annex to the Jinmao Tower. This is a Dim Sum placeThere are private rooms for group dining, and tables in the open atrium area for groups of 1-6 people. The food is of very good quality and they have a good selection. When I go with my colleagues for lunch we...

Pudong Transportation

  • MAGLEV

If you are in Pudong, you should try to take the Maglev - the best technology in land transportation. I took the Maglev from the Long Yang station to the airport, and it took only 8 minutes. They give a discount if you show your plane ticket. (As of Sept. 06, the discounted fare is RMB40).The Maglev can reach speeds over 400 km/h. That's fast! It's...

  • Take the #2 metro line to get deep into...

Even if you're staying in Puxi during your visit to Shanghai, it's easy to get to Pudong by taking the #2 metro line. If you have some extra time in Shanghai, you might find it interestd to take a subway ride out to either Dong Chang Rd. or Wei Fang Rd, or even deeper into Pudong if you like (although there is very little going on at the terminus)....

Pudong Tourist Traps

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Maybe it's because I work in the Jinmao Building I don't have any desire to go the very top for the view (and pay the relatively hefty admission to get up there). But, I have been to the Cloud 9 Bar on the 87th floor and the Piano Bar on the 53rd floor many times, and think the views are great there. For the price of admission to the top you can enjoy a drink or two in the bar. I actually prefer the view from the 53rd floor (or from one of the Hyatt restaurants on the 54th floor during the daytime). When you're on the 87th floor (or on viewing deck on 88), you're so high you can hardly see the ground. Maybe that's part of the thrill, but to me an airplane takeoff or landing is more interesting. The most interesting thing about the 87th floor bar is the steel support columns all around - now that's neat to see how they have to make the building so strong at the top to keep it stable.

Unique Suggestions: Choose either the Jinmao OR the Pearl Tower to ascend, but not both, and only do so "if you must".

Pudong Off The Beaten Path

  • Jinqiao Export Processing Zone

The Jinqiao Export Processing Zone (JEPZ) is in the middle of the Shanghai Pudong New Area. About 4 kilometers to its west is the Huangpu River, and 12 kilometers to its northeast is the Yangtze River. To the west of the JEPZ is the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Area, to the north the Waigaoqiao Bonded Area, and to the south the Zhangjiang...

  • The sea in Shanghai

The name shang hai means on the sea . However, few tourists ever see the sea for themselves when in Shanghai. One way to see it is to play at one of the posh golf clubs along the ocean (i.e. bin hai golf club, and others). There is no beach or defined recreational points of interest that I know of out here. This is why a trip to the sea is an ...

  • Catholic Cathedral in east Pudong

I came across this catholic cathedral while riding my bike in Pudong. It was a really pleasant discovery because I wasn't expecting it to be there (it is located about halfway between the Lujiazui district in Pudong and the Pudong airport, i.e. really off the tourist circuit). It turns out that this church is over 100 years old and has been serving...

Equipment: If you are looking for sporting equipment (skiing, bicycling, ball-sports, etc.) then you should go to Decathalon Sports (they have stores in Europe and the USA too). Prices are good as is the selection.
