Unlike the many financial districts in the world, this is one where the night activities rival that of the day. At the v. least, there are tons of people walking around enjoying the breeze & new architecture designed by famous architects from all over the world.

Enjoy the glittering lights of Puxi & Pudong at the same time on the river cruise. The boat will ply along Huangpu River, one of the most famour rivers in China. A lot has happened around this area in the 50s or even earlier. Well, I happened to know this from the many Hong Kong TV serials, one v. famous being "Shang Hai Tan".
A little imagination is all one needs to go back in time.

To complete seeing Shanghai, go on the HUANG PU RIVER CRUISE.
To a visitor, there are 3 main perspective on Shanghai; from the gutters, from the heights & from the waters. I love the heights but the waters offers some very remarkable views of this city. We took a 2 hour trip on the Huang Pu River & enjoyed ourselves tremendously.
We paid about RMB 90 for a special class A on the top deck but I think one could get a cheaper rate on a smaller boat & lower deck.

Now this was something that I had missed out the first time I was in Shanghai:
a walk along the Bund at nighttime!
Thanks to the vicinity of our hotel, we could do it despite the jet lag and the miles of walking on that day - and I must say, it sure was worth it!

All 5 Star hotels have great night clubs especailly on the weekend. However there are so many other places to go you should really get to know a local. For the best nightclub/restuarant I recommend PArk 97 AKA California. you will find an interestigng mix of Expats (young and old) and Shanghai babies.
Also see is the longbar attached to the Shanghai center/ritz portman hotel and ajacent to the HArdrock cafe. This bar is infamous but very friendly and probably most comforatable for the lone business traveler. There are a lot of girls who 'work' there but they are friendly if you make your intentions clear. (See my pictutes)

The Acrobatics at Shanghai are not to be missed. They are held each night and last for about 2 hours. I'm sure a 2-D picture won't make this show justice, but one can begin to imagine how amazing this show is by looking at the pics in my travelogue.

Xin Tian Di, on the Taicang Road.
this place is rebuilt on the base of old Shikumen(which is the most charactristic building of Old Shanghai).where now is modernized but still keep the appeal of old Shanghai. There are different style restaurants and bars which make this place more charming.

I did tour a number of the nightlife areas. Unfortunately I was so tired on Friday night that I didnt get to stay out too late. Here's a link for most of the bars, they are clustered in three areas, all covered in the link. Once you get to one place, you will see a bunch more.

The two most lively streets (in my opinion) are Heng Shan Lu and Mao Ming Nan Lu. These seem to have a critical mass of bars and people.
Alternatives include bowling, KTV (karaoke) and some kind of strange bars where you get a personal host or hostess. Didn't do any of the above, so I can't comment.
Dress Code: Casual, no dress up here.

Too many places to go at Shanghai's night. Personally, I prefer M-Box, Judy's too and Paulaner Brauhaus.
They are my favourite. :-)
Buddy, enjoy your night life in Shanghai!

Shanghai is quite a modernized city. You can easily find cafe, bar, disco place, teahouses of various style(traditional style mainly for Yuppis, taiwanese style for teenagers). Karaoke is still popular in China. The best Karaoke place in Shanghai is Cashbox.
The most famous nightlife streets are:
1. Heng Shan Road: Bouborn Street, Real Love
2. Mao Ming Road: 1930
3. Xin Tian Di I mentioned in Favorate Restaurant is also one of the most popular nightlife spots.
