At the rooftop of Captain Hostel you'll find Captain Bar, with reasonable priced drinks and one of the best views of The Bund and Pudong area. The bar is open to everyone and not just hostel guests. We were there on Halloween night and my picture of The Bund has a ghost like feeling due to the haze... Everyone but a few of us was dressed in costumes. If I remember correctly, it's open between 11am and midnight.
Dress Code: Come as you are.

Tracy and I are no night angels, in fact we are usually early to bed and early to rise. Some nights we were in our pj's and in bed by 7.30pm - I kid you not! But ... I believe Shanghai is indeed a city that is best viewed at night - it is a city of lights, and lots and lots of them!
We were lucky enough to have the best night views of Pudong from the Bund, on the roof-top at Bar Rouge. Also, we were in Pudong at night, when we went to Cloud 9 Skylounge. At all times walking the streets at night, we felt 100% safe, there was no danger at all, well none that we saw.
If you are in Shanghai, you really need to get out at night and just see the lights! They are truly worth it.

When night comes, the stores along East Nanjing Road are decorated with colourful sparkling lights which make for great photo opportunities. Even if you don't have any shopping plans you will find the street itself a great attraction. Wandering on the road and hungry? There are a lot of excellent restaurants on the East Nanjing Road offering delicious food and good service, but don't expect any bars.

Cloud 9 in the Grand Hyatt was the highest hotel bar in the world (until the SWFC was built next door), with correspondingly dizzy views of the city (providing clouds don't obscure your view). It's certainly not cheap and there is a minimum charge, but drinks and nibbles are good, and service is excellent. The main attraction is definitely the view but you'll have to ask to be seated by the windows to take advantage of this (the staff have been obliging both times I've been here).
Dress Code: Smart.

This should be one of the highest bar in the world, located in 85th floor in Hyatt Shanghai. It provides you a great view to River Huangpu, part of River Yangtze. You can see the Orient Pearl Tower, the Bund, and financial buildings in CBD of Shanghai. Feeling the breathing of the very heart of China.
Well, besides good view, I had no comments about this place. The service there was not even comparable to the view. Well, if you speak English, you will enjoy a lot more than I did.

I arrived in Shanghai last week, and found this venue down the road from my university. Its located right next to West Yanan road metro stop line 3/4 at the edge of this beautiful park called Tian Shan Park. It's a great place if you love discovering new underground bands and cheap beer.
Yu Yin Tang is one of the oldest underground live music houses in shanghai, and has become a staple in Shanghai. Featuring regular gigs every weekend, It brings in underground acts both worldwide and local. There's something different every night of the month. This place has it all: cheap drinks, great atmosphere, friendly staff and a knack for booking the top up and coming Indie acts around!!!
Upcoming bands to check out: I really dig the group coming on the 21st

Great Music, no hassling waiters or waitresses around. Prices of Drinks are ok. You can dance on the bar table, which is great. great music. On Sunday there is salsa night. Watch out for one Bartender, who tries to cheat people if you do not know the prices.
