    Thai in Shanghai
  • Satisfaction:

  • Gosh, how could I forget the name of that Thai restaurant! The interior is very traditional Thai, it was like you were transported to Thailand. Well, until the waitress asks for your order and starts speaking in Chinese.

The dishes were cooked no differently than if they were cooked in Thailand - spicy hot, as in chilli hot. I liked the sour taste of the tom yum gung, but my favorite is the dessert - fresh, ripe mango with steamed glutinous rice.

    1931: Intimate dining in a 1930's setting

  • With a discrete street frontage, walls hung with 1930's advertising, and a few small tables this was intimate dining at its best.
Broccoli and garlic sauce, spring rolls, delicious mouthfuls for appetisers and pancakes which we filled with a lamb mixture, this was interesting and tasty food, beautifully presented.
The total for food, plus 2 glasses of mineral water each and coffee for 2, was about 500 RMB but the food was less than half the total!

Arch Cafe: Great Western Food at Decent Price

  • Sleek and stylish interior, originally opened for the designer crowd but became quite popular for the overall expat crowd. It's not a big place so better hope that whenever you visit it's your lucky day coz chances are it'd be jampacked with people. It's got very good food, nice presentation and believe it or not, very reasonably priced. Never went back to Element Fresh for their Weekend Brunch after we discovered Arch's.

Try their Weekend Brunch...very good deal and very good food; Other alacarte items are good too. Just had Chicken Pesto with Feta Cheese today. Oh did I mention the cheesecake that is to die for? :-)

Barbarosa Lounge and Restaurant: Arabian feast
  • Satisfaction:
  • lindyz

  • This was yet another place that Chris took us to, that we would have never even known it existed. In the middle of the Peoples Park you will find this Restaurant, the Barbarosa. The setting is beautiful, gardens, water features and in the middle of Shanghai, you could be absolutely anywhere in the world. You are a world away from the traffic and chaos that is "Shanghai".

Any meal you order here comes complete with a light salad, bread and soup, so you realy are getting a 3 course meal for the price of one. And the prices were extremely reasonable, so I would urge you to seek out the Barbarosa - although I cannot exactly give you directions to find it, apart from to say that it is in the middle of Peoples Park and next to the Art Museum.

I ordered a very yummy chicken salad, Tracy had smoked turkey foccacia and Chris had grilled eggplant foccacia. The bill came to a total of 347rmb including 2 Tsingtaos and 1 Evian water, and Tracy and I split the bill between us. So, for around 100rmb you can have yourself a healthy and delicious Arabic style meal in perfect surroundings in the heart of Shanghai. Chris also took me upstairs, there are 3 levels to this place. A separate function area on the 1st floor and a roof-top area up the top. Chris said he has been to a few parties here and had a ball!

    Barbarosa is VERY HIGHLY recommended.

Best Food Court: Local food - fresh and plentiful
  • Satisfaction:
  • lindyz
  • By lindyz on October 5, 2009
  • Shanghai Page by lindyz
  • We stumbled across this Food Court accidentally (on a shopping expedition of course!). It is situated on busy Fuzhou Road and tucked away from the road a bit, so a little bid hard to find, but it is well worth the effort.

Basically it is a chinese food court specialising in all things local and fresh. They cook your food right there and then in front of you, I like that in a food court. We went here 3 times in total, in fact we could have eaten here every meal in Shanghai as it was that good. I brought home a menu with pictures but didnt realise it was entirely in Chinese.

First time I ate a Prawn curry rice dish at a cost of only 18rmb = about $3AUD. It was absolutely delicious, just the right amount of curry for my palate. Second time I had a chicken dish with vegies and an egg, whilst it was still very yummy, just a tad too much chilli for me - and they said it had no la!!! Third meal I ate here was a beff noodle dish and it was super-scrumptious at a cost of only 15rmb = about $3AUD. This was our last meal in Shanghai before our plane flew out and it was a lovely way to end our time in such a fascinating city.

    Bonomi Cafe: Well-Hidden Cafe
  • Satisfaction:
  • nomadig
  • By nomadig on January 16, 2005
  • Shanghai Page by nomadig
  • The most well hidden cafe that I have encountered so far is located near the Bund in Shanghai. Café Bonomi is on the second floor in a building hosting a bank and Virgin Airlines office. There is a small advert on the door, and you can easily walk past it, if you are not paying attention. Hint: the building looks like Whitehall.

To get to the cafe, climb up to the second floor and follow the signs to navigate the corridors. Remember that you need to climb one set of stairs to get to the ground floor and then still two sets for the second floor -- somebody could rightly say that it's the fourth floor, but let's follow the floor numbers of the building.

The cafe itself is Italian, and you can expect excellent coffee and sandwiches. If the weather is nice, go to the terrace to avoid the constant smoking of Chinese bureacrats killing some time in the cafe. The prices are comparable to the rest of the cafes around the town.

Cafe Montmartre: French Café in French Concession
  • Satisfaction:
  • nomadig
  • By nomadig on January 15, 2005

  • Shanghai was shared between Western powers on 19th century, and the former French part, known as French Concession, contains still some French charm and is a nice area to stroll around in general.

Cafe Montmartre could be located anywhere in French, and you wouldn't spot much difference -- except that the staff is Chinese. The cafe is conveniently located next to the Xiangyang Market, and it sells European coffees, sandwiches, cakes and also some bigger meals.

The prices are somewhat higher than in local cafes in Shanghai, but from the Western European point of view this place is still decently priced. Cafe au lait, soda and a sandwich costed approximately seven euros. The patrons seemed to consists mostly tourists, as these prices will keep locals out.

    Canton: Chinese à la Carte

  • If you're familiar with the basic Chinese joints found everywhere in the globe, try this gourmet Cantonese restaurant with a view. Located in the Jin Mao tower, on 54th floor, Canton has both excellent fares and views.

The food is similar to the food server outside China, as most of the restaurants abroad serve Cantonese food. The interior and the service, as well as the taste, however set the difference.

The prices are not bad, three course meal for two, without wines, costed about 450e. It was one the most inexpensive meals that I've ever had in restaurant with level of this. Remember to reserve the table well in advance to get a window view. Try to get Bund view, but remember occasionally to concentrate on the food and the company, too.

    DND: Dumplings!
  • Satisfaction:
  • By lucincia on April 26, 2006

  • A chain fastfood-style dumplings place, located near tourist places. Get lot's of dumplings of different flavors for cheap and stuff yourself silly! Menu is in Chinese but sometimes you can encounter staff who can speak a little English.

When DW and I were there last time, an Australian lady was standing behind us. Seeing that DW is a Caucasian, she assumed that I know how to speak English. But, her accent was too heavy for me to follow! So, it ended up with the lady speaking Australian-accented English to DW, who "translated" it to me in English, then I translate it in Chinese to the wait staff. It was humorous :)

Order from the board showing the dumpling available at the time. They cost about 3-6RMB for 6 dumplings, depending on the filling. You can ask them to put everything on the same plate or separate them out. We like to put everything on the same plate so we can try to guess what we are eating! We typically ordered 24 dumplings between two adults and DD7. You can also order the house special rice or noodles. They run 10RMB per plate of generous serving.

    EVERYTHING!
