Ding Te Lei: Great yellow croaker noodle soup

    by meteorologist1 Written Jan 8, 2012

This very small restaurant located on Huaihai Road is very popular among locals. It is one of the few places in Shanghai that serves yellow croaker noodle soup. This is a very delicious Shanghai-style noodle soup with fish that warms you up during the winter. A must try! Seating is extremely limited, so it is actually best to go during non-lunch and non-dinner hours such as 2 or 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The menu posted behind the counter is in Chinese only (see photo).

Shanghai Cuisine Variety Show: Famous Shanghai Cuisine!

    by rabbit06 Written Jan 6, 2012

This restaurant does not have a show as such but is a truly gastronomic dining experience with local cuisine at it's best. You will need to book or be patient and wait in line for a table with plenty of chairs to take the wait off your feet, but well worth it! We had a private room very near the rest rooms....very handy...lol The ambience is very Shanghai and the service was faultless as you come to expect in this very modern city with so many restaurants.

Quick and convenient or we were eating here late?...lol

Favorite Dish: Yes you can get many Canton style dishes here, but eating a late dinner with locals was a little one sided tending for their Shanghainese taste buds but not to worry the chilli fish was delicious!

The Entrance Looks good! mmmm not bad!

    by rabbit06 Updated Dec 12, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A very large restaurant with which we were lucky enough to have one of the many private rooms. Certainly has a very nice China feel here and the staff were very good, especially when rabbit turned up a little late looking for his room....does anyone speak Engrish??? LMAO

Favorite Dish: Very Shanghainese food here which Shirley just loves eating from jelly fish, bamboo, eel, fish, assorted salads, frog, tofu, buns, some plates that rabbit did not know lol, but the ginger beef was the winner!!

Street View Steinlager...Lucky! Bring it On! Looks Good! Can you see the Ginger Beef?

    by rabbit06 Updated Dec 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Nice restaurant with it's indoor outdoor flow but the air conditioning was more refreshing inside away from the high Shanghai humidity. Plenty of Italian and Western food here, there is something for everyone.

Favorite Dish: Had a very nice afternoon, lost count of how many Carlsburg's but Shirley just loved the coffee and cheese cake!

Aroma @ Hyatt on the Bund: Freshly Shucked Oysters!

    by rabbit06 Updated Nov 22, 2011

Favorite Dish: Very pleasant buffet dinning experience with a fantastic selection of different foods! We started with fresh tuna from the sushi bar but then Rabbit found two chefs shucking fresh oysters....wow and after eighteen decided to go onto the scallops from then onto hot meats including lamb chops and sausages. There is plenty of Western foods on offer with equally Chinese for Shirley......but make sure you leave room for the desert bar, just heavenly!

Where to start? Fresh! Fantastic selection! Heavenly! Yum!

    Simply Thai: Fantastic Thai Cuisine

    by roamer61 Written Nov 8, 2011

This outstanding restaurant serves classic Thai Cuisine. Their menu is extensive and its entrance is on a side street in the French Concession. You may have to look ata map or ask to find it. You can sit indoors or out.

Favorite Dish: I ordered Som Tam, Green Papaya Salad. Dish is with shredded papaya, carrots, long beans, peanuts and dried shrimp all mixed together in a spicy thai dressing. Its very hot, but you can ask to be less so if you desire. It was outrageously delicious.

    Venexia: Fine Italian Cuisine

    by roamer61 Written Nov 7, 2011

This excellent Italian Restaurant in the old city near the Crowne Plaza Shanghai serves delicious food for either lunch or dinner including pizzas and pasta. Thogh its location might be a bit off the beaten path, it is definitely worth seeking it out.
They have an ala carte menu and a pre-fixe menu, which is an excellent deal as it includes a free beverage and 2 or 3 courses. Luciano Palasciano is the Sales Manager.

Favorite Dish: The Octopus Salad with Lemon and Greens is delicious and the pasta with seafood is great as well. I highly recommend both of these dishes.

    Wow!City: Hot Pot

    by rabbit06 Updated Oct 31, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant is very new, clean, nice decor and friendly staff. A pleasant enjoyable dinning experience without any pressure, sit back and relax away from the fast-pace of Shanghai. Think this was not a byo beers, so keep yours under the table!

Favorite Dish: This is a Hot Pot buffet style, you pick your own food and sauces. Some food Rabbit did not know...haha, stayed safe on lamb and beef slices plus some shelfish and seafood. Shirley tucked into most on offer and still had room for deserts from their wonderful selection, Rabbit forgot to leave any room.....bugga!

Here it is! Upstairs Very Pleasant! Yummy!

Top Choice Restaurant and Bar: American Hamburgers!

    by rabbit06 Updated Oct 29, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We spent an enjoyable afternoon here kicking back with quite a few Tsingtao's which is Rabbit's favourite hobby...just fantastic! Arriving before the lunch service we were seated outside taking in the many sights of The Cool Docks and later moving inside to a window booth seat where it was a lot cooler with the air conditioning and even some western music...!!

Favorite Dish: Well if your homesick they not only serve up American style hamburgers but for the weight conscience a variety of salads. The winner here would be the Cheese Cake, they pride themselves on this and Rabbit lost count .....lmao!

Entrance Menu Tsingtao & Cheese Cake That's The Bar! Pleasant

    Shanghai Slim's: Steak Lobster Seafood

    by rabbit06 Updated Oct 28, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Apart from local staff you would think your in a western restaurant when reading the menu and making yourselves comfortable with a few beers. Outside is also very popular with locals who like to be seen out in public. Plenty of leather and timber to give this place a plush, elegant relaxed atmosphere which Rabbit could have settled in for a serious session...lol

Favorite Dish: Well not only did we have an American joining us for dinner this evening but Connie who just loves eating steak and travels to the USA regulary to get her fix! Shirley went for one of the Lobster dishes which was rich and tastey! Rabbit of course ordering the Prime Steak and Mash following his new found American freind, but maybe a smaller portion as those Americans can certanley tuck away HUGE amounts of beef which this restaurant has become famous for!!

Looks Good! Starters Prime American Beef! Lobster! Shellfish!

    Yue Lai Restaurant: Shanghai Food!

    by rabbit06 Updated Oct 28, 2011

Huanghe Rd in Shanghai is a famous restaurant street with many to choose from! Yue Lai was packed with people, this restaurant must be so popular? Perhaps only for the pricing or maybe the touts outside inviting all and everyone inside. We got jammed in a table upstairs under a small fan that was the aircon...lol If you ignored the rubbish laying around, closed your eyes when in the bathrooms this could be OK. Anyway we had a great catch up with some very old freinds here for an evening meal, with quite a few beers which made for a memorable evening.

Favorite Dish: Don't get Rabbit wrong as he has been out the back of some terrible restaurants and seen the unspeakable but suggested Shirley mention this to her food hygiene police freinds! Depite all, the food was not that bad, very typical Shangainese which we enjoyed along with all the other diners in the restaurant, although mainly locals.
