I ate at Coco Curry House one afternoon during a visit to Shanghai in May 2008. This good value Japanese chain of curryhouses has several branches throughout the city, and I ate at the South Shanxi Road branch, just off Nanjing Road East. The dining area features one large table at the centre with individually set places, and a handful of smaller tables around the edge. I took a seat at the large communal table and scanned the impressive list of curries on the menu. The vast array of curries includes: meat (beef, beef burgers, pork cutlet, sausages, chicken…), seafood (prawn, clam, mixed seafood, fish, octopus…), vegetable, mushroom and even cheese curry! There is also a selection of Japanese curries. As well as curries, the menu features a choice of soups (including corn soup and clam chowder), a variety of shaved ice desserts, ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies, soft drinks, hot drinks and Kirin and Suntory beers.
I opted for: A bowl of corn soup - Cost: 10 Yuan / 1 GBP A bowl of tasty, piping hot sweetcorn soup. Very nice! Mushroom curry, with extra rice - Cost: 31 Yuan / 3 GBP Ordering a curry at Coco’s involves a 4 step decision-making process: i) Choose your curry ingredients from the extensive list; I opted for mushroom curry. ii) Choose your rice quantity. The standard dish comes with 300gr of rice. You can pay less and have only 200gr, or you can pay more for larger quantities. I opted to pay an additional 5 Yuan (0.50 GBP) for 400gr of rice. iii) Pick the strength of curry that you feel you can handle! There are 5 options ranging from mild through to very, very hot. I opted for option number 3 (“hot”) and that was plenty hot enough for my taste buds! iv) Choose any toppings that you want on your curry. These include sweetcorn, sausages, cheese and omelette amongst many others. I didn’t order any toppings. The hot mushroom curry was very tasty, contained dozens of large mushrooms and was the ideal strength for my western tastes. The 400gr portion of rice was the ideal size, with plenty of rice to complement the curry, but not an overwhelming quantity. Kirin beer - Cost: 12 Yuan / 1.10 GBP for a 335ml can Excellent Japanese curries in Shanghai. A huge choice of tasty dishes at competitive prices. Highly recommended! I visited Sichuan Restaurant one evening during a visit to Shanghai in May 2008. This large, brightly lit, local restaurant is located on Nanjing Road West, close to the metro station of the same name. Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a couple of staff who enquired whether I wanted BBQ food or Sichuan food. I opted for the latter and I was led upstairs to the second floor, passing the first floor which was devoted to BBQ cuisine. The second floor dining room was cavernous, with dozens of neatly laid tables, but was almost empty. By contrast, the first floor BBQ dining area was fairly busy with diners. The menu was not particularly extensive and the available dishes could easily be displayed on a two page menu. The choice included a handful of shrimp, chicken, beef and pork stir fries, a range of dishes cooked in bean curd sauce and a selection of lighter snacks such as steamed buns, wantons, noodles and fried rice. The restaurant certainly looked the part, and the staff were very friendly, but I have to say that the food was pretty awful. This was without doubt one of the worst meals that I have ever experienced during my travels.
I opted for: Shrimps in salt egg sauce - Cost: 46 Yuan / 4 GBP This dish was dreadful. When it first arrived, in a tin foil covered dish, I thought it was a complimentary dip or perhaps a soup. It was orange/red in colour and there was vast quantities of tofu floating in it. I waited a while for my main course to arrive, but when nothing was forthcoming, I established that this was the main dish. I fished around in the depths of the dish, but my attempts to locate even a single shrimp were unsuccessful. The dish was lukewarm, and the overriding taste was one of salt. I managed only a couple of mouthfuls, and even that was a struggle! Fried noodles - Cost: 12 Yuan / 1 GBP Thankfully, I had also ordered a portion of noodles to accompany my main dish. These noodles (heavily saturated in soy sauce and containing chicken, bean sprouts and spring onion) were nothing special, but they were at least served in a large portion and so constituted a main dish in themselves. I ate the whole plateful and my hunger was at least satisfied. 2 x bottles of Tsingtao Draft - Cost: 15 Yuan / 1.40 GBP per 600ml bottle Is it possible to have bottles of “draft” beer? Is that not a contradiction in terms? Either way, they were nice and cold and certainly better than the food! A large restaurant on Nanjing Road West. My Sichuan food was pretty awful, but the restaurant’s more popular BBQ area might offer better fare. Not recommended. Xiao He at No.54 Wu Jiang Lu near the beginning of the food street was my first stop. Named after the restaurant's kitten, little blackie, Xiao He is a very small shop with only 3 tables. However, it's a must try for oyster lovers. Grilled oysters and seafood are freshly prepared on a small hot stove outside this tiny restaurant. They also do take aways and all restaurants in Wu Jiang Lu welcome to bring other food in.

I visited Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream during my trip to Shanghai in May 2008. My subsequent research has taught me that Cold Stone Creamery was first founded in Arizona, USA, but now operates franchises in a variety of European, Middle East and Far East countries. I visited the franchise which is located in the upmarket Xintiandi district of Shanghai. Xintiandi is a small block of restored “shikumen” houses (traditional Chinese stone gate houses) which now play host to fancy restaurants, cafes and boutique shops. Cold Stone Creamery is located at the southernmost end of Xintiandi, close to a large shopping mall. There are a few tables inside Cold Stone Creamery, but I preferred to sit at one of the outdoor tables on the pedestrianised precinct out front. The menu features a confusingly large choice of ice cream options, with dozens upon dozens of ice cream flavours and all manner of accompaniments. You can basically create an ice cream combination to suit your own tastes by following the step-by-step guide on the menu: First, choose which flavour(s) of ice cream you want. Choices include: chocolate, cookie dough, cheesecake, French vanilla, mango, strawberry, lemon sorbet, pistachio, coconut, bubble gum, peach, mint, Irish cream, butter pecan, cinnamon… Then, choose which size you want: “Mine” – choose from 4oz, 6oz or 8oz of ice cream; these sizes are designed for individuals; “Ours” – larger sizes designed for 2 or 3 people to share; “Everybody’s” – huge sizes designed for more than 3 people to share! Next, choose the additional ingredients and toppings that you want: “Candy” – Snickers, M&Ms, KitKat, chocolate chips, Gummi Bears, marshmallows… “Cakes and Cookies” – chocolate brownie, cookie dough, pie crust… “Fruit” – raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, apple pie filling, cherry pie filling… “Nuts” – pecans, almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, walnuts… Finally, decide whether you would like your ice cream concoction to be served with a waffle and, if so, would you like a normal waffle or a chocolate-dipped waffle? Prices are pretty steep, especially by Shanghai standards. I paid 52 Yuan / 4.25 GBP for the following ice cream combination: Ice cream: Chocolate Size: “Gotta Have It” (the largest of the “Mine” options, with 8oz of ice cream); Additions: Chocolate brownie and chocolate shavings; Waffle: normal An ice cream lover’s dream – but pretty expensive! I ate at City Diner one lunch time during a visit to Shanghai in May 2008. City Diner is located on Tongren Road, just a few metres off Nanjing Road West, and is a cross between an American-style diner and a British-style pub. I first noticed City Diner a few days prior to actually eating there. It was the large menu board outside that caught my eye, advertising the various special offers: “Early Bird Special Breakfast” – a cooked English breakfast, served between 6am and 10am, for 25 Yuan (2 GBP); “Soup, Salad, Sandwich” – any two of these along with a drink for 45 Yuan (4 GBP); “Happy Hour” – buy one, get one free on draught Hoegaarden and Stella. After the best part of a week eating noodles and other local specialities, I was ready for a change and this looked to be the ideal place to get some western food. The menu features a huge selection of burgers (ham, cheese, bacon, mushroom, chicken…), sandwiches (ranging from steak sandwiches to banana with peanut butter and honey) and pizzas, as well as other meat dishes and light meals. City Diner also offers a good selection of beers, with Hoegaarden, Stella and Carlsberg available on tap and Tsingtao, Heineken, Corona, Duvel, Leffe Blonde, Erdinger Weissbier, Samuel Adams and Brooklyn IPA available in bottles. Wines, cocktails, spirits, soft drinks and hot beverages are also available. The dining area was dimly lit, with black tables and high stools. There was a music stage in one corner (live music performances take place in the evenings) and the walls were adorned with autographed photographs and other musical paraphernalia. There were three TV screens showing the latest news and sport, including ESPN Sport which was showing a rerun of the previous evening’s Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea. I wasn’t sure what I fancied to eat, but my mind was made up as soon as the waiter alerted me to the special offer: Earthquake Relief - Cost: 75 Yuan / 6 GBP A week prior to my visit to Shanghai, a devastating earthquake had hit China’s Sichuan province. This special offer was City Diner’s way of contributing to the relief effort. All proceeds from this meal went to the Red Cross Society of China. The meal consisted of a Lonestar Burger (containing beef, bacon, onions, lettuce and tomato and accompanied by French fries, mayonnaise and coleslaw) and a bottomless soft drink (I topped my Coke up two or three times). The food was pretty good as burgers go – it was well cooked and served in a decent sized portion. A large selection of burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and beers!
