not bad. yes, enviorment. and, food, yes not typical chinese food, kinda combination, and creation. I like some ideas here, but not all. =) the important is, since you don`t really care about food so much if it is fairly okay, and the enviorment is great. bring your loving one here, you may get agreement with marry her.;-P
Favorite Dish: hmmm, there is a dish, named iced mango, not bad, and also longjin tea with chicken sth mixed(forgot the name of it, kinda poetic tho ;-P)

We stumbled across this Food Court accidentally (on a shopping expedition of course!). It is situated on busy Fuzhou Road and tucked away from the road a bit, so a little bid hard to find, but it is well worth the effort.
Basically it is a chinese food court specialising in all things local and fresh. They cook your food right there and then in front of you, I like that in a food court. We went here 3 times in total, in fact we could have eaten here every meal in Shanghai as it was that good. I brought home a menu with pictures but didnt realise it was entirely in Chinese.
First time I ate a Prawn curry rice dish at a cost of only 18rmb = about $3AUD. It was absolutely delicious, just the right amount of curry for my palate. Second time I had a chicken dish with vegies and an egg, whilst it was still very yummy, just a tad too much chilli for me - and they said it had no la!!! Third meal I ate here was a beff noodle dish and it was super-scrumptious at a cost of only 15rmb = about $3AUD. This was our last meal in Shanghai before our plane flew out and it was a lovely way to end our time in such a fascinating city.

This was yet another place that Chris took us to, that we would have never even known it existed. In the middle of the Peoples Park you will find this Restaurant, the Barbarosa. The setting is beautiful, gardens, water features and in the middle of Shanghai, you could be absolutely anywhere in the world. You are a world away from the traffic and chaos that is "Shanghai".
Any meal you order here comes complete with a light salad, bread and soup, so you realy are getting a 3 course meal for the price of one. And the prices were extremely reasonable, so I would urge you to seek out the Barbarosa - although I cannot exactly give you directions to find it, apart from to say that it is in the middle of Peoples Park and next to the Art Museum.
I ordered a very yummy chicken salad, Tracy had smoked turkey foccacia and Chris had grilled eggplant foccacia. The bill came to a total of 347rmb including 2 Tsingtaos and 1 Evian water, and Tracy and I split the bill between us. So, for around 100rmb you can have yourself a healthy and delicious Arabic style meal in perfect surroundings in the heart of Shanghai. Chris also took me upstairs, there are 3 levels to this place. A separate function area on the 1st floor and a roof-top area up the top. Chris said he has been to a few parties here and had a ball!
Barbarosa is VERY HIGHLY recommended.

Walking down on East Nanjing Road, we turned to one of the crossing streets and were sort of ushered in by this woman. She showed us a very extensive menu with pictures and English translations and when I saw their ribs, I was sold.
The restaurant is adjacent to the pedestrian street and didn't have much of a cozy environment (which apparently is the norm in China) but their food was excellent and reasonably priced. The staff spoke some English.
I have no idea of what the restaurant is called so I took the name I got on their napkins and chopsticks.
Favorite Dish: I had the best rice dish I've had in years, rice with bacon and vegetables, plus sweet and sour ribs and spring rolls. I can't remember what Claus had with the ribs (he's not a rice person), and to drink we had Snow beer. The total bill was 81 RMB and totally worth it.

You pay 150RMB/person for all-u-can-eat and drink, which includes hibachi and sushi, tons of seafood too(shrimp, cod, salmon, sashimi, etc). It is a lot of fun to sit around the big table with the food being cooked right in front of you.. and get to know other people and chat about shanghai!!
Favorite Dish: Sashimi, shrimp, Clam..

A cozy and colorful cafe with locals and expats and tourists, the feeling is relaxed and there is that ineffable sophisticated feel here...just what a cafe should be! The food is good too: the sandwiches are delicious as is the unique "pancake" with bananas and the brownies are wonderful too....the staff is good...it is, in short, a quintessential cafe with a Shanghai touch. They do not rush you out and are very relaxed about giving you your bill; at night people hang-out and some play Go. Also, they have a bookshelf with some interesting books. It is rare to find a cafe like this anywhere in the world...that kind of sweet feeling place like Berkeley had at one time, or New York or Montreal...alive and well in Shanghai.
Favorite Dish: Love the homemade brownies and the tea is excellent. Great coffee too: they will make it as strong or weak as you prefer.

Sweat it all out over a boiling Inner Mongolian Hot Pot consisting of 2 sections - one with spicy chilli soup, and the other clear herbal broth. What you do is that you order whatever cut of meat you desire, plus vegetables, herbs and mushrooms and then dunk it into the soup to cook them. The soup will impart a lovely aroma and flavour to the items. Beef and lamb slices are must order, as well as golden mushrooms, mountain yams and crunchy radicchio. Ox and Lamb phallus and testicles are also available.
Favorite Dish: The lamb slices were sliced so thin that they soaked up the flavour of the broth. The golden mushrooms, mountain yams are great. The lamb phallus tasted like beef tendons!

Would have to say typically Shanghai in presentation and ambience. Our waitress was very polite and helful ( enough for a tip ) Shirley's brother and cousin are freinds with the owner and come here at least once a week, think that's their " drinking night " .....very nice!!!
Favorite Dish: The river crab ( see Susan's pic ), but the whole crab's are tasty and of cource the beef was just so delicious!
Just have to keep on eating!!

Around the world there are Irish pubs. It's like a theme....the Dublin McDonalds, as Irish as Boston St Patricks Day bright green beer. Wherever a bloke can find a set of old Guinness posters and get hold of imported Kilkenny, an Irish pub springs up.
In most cases, the tack and Irishness is so crass that it says "this is not how an Irish pub looks" or "This is an Irish Theme Park".
The Blarney Stone is a bit different. Sure (to be sure?) there are plenty of Guinness and Kilkenny adverts, lots of "this is Ireland" kitsch. But this is also a place where you see grumpy old bastards in flat caps sullenly mulling over the days events over a pint. This is local Irish lads, on the up or on the down, playing cards and eying up strangers as they come in from the cold. The floor is grubby, the seats ridiculously overholstered. A iPod plays out all kinds of junk through a huge sound system.
A sad looking man sets up his guitar. The landlord sits with his mates near the TV, looking the unhappiest man on the planet.
You could have walked off the streets of Dundalk on a wet, windy November night and into a local. The Blarney Stone is a very different overseas Irish pub: it looks, feels and is the real thing.
You want service or cherries on a stick in a cocktail, go elsewhere: this is a piece of Ireland dug up and set down in Shanghai. Just the place for a few pints, read the paper and muttering darkly about why doesn't RTE have a worldwide TV news service (ENN?).
Favorite Dish: The steak and kidney pie. Oh yes. Definitely. Vast quantities of gravy in a huge bowl. Expect ten and twenty blackbirds in this one.
