I visited this place twice to fulfill my shopping needs. There's even a bank at the Ground Floor (Bank of China) whereby we can easily do our currency exchange here if we are in need of cash RMB as all of the shops in here does not accept major credit or charge card. This plaza offers many small outlets that sells :- 1) Clothes (man, woman & children) 2) Accessories (watches, pearl bracelets/necklace, belt etc.) 3) Bags 4) Shoes 5) Table cloth / Bedsheet / Bed spread etc. As an advise or tips for shopping. Please do survey to the maximum to each outlet so that you can select/choose the right/reasonable price of the item that you wanted to buy. The trick is, if you wanted to buy a jacket, go to one outlet then from the opening price by the seller, bargain it for 70% (e.g if RMB100.00, bargain to RMB30.00). If the seller do not want to accept our price, said thank you then straightly walk out from the shop, just see the reaction of the seller whether he/she will call you back to bargain more or agree with your price. If there's no reaction from them, we should know that our price is not reasonable for them. Go to the next shop, select the same item, bargain again with slightly high bargain price from the 1st shop. In this case, bargain for RMB30.00(same price), if the seller insist, up another RM10.00, make it RM40.00. Use the same strategy which is say thank you and walk out from the outlet. Do this until one outlet agreed with the pricing. Always bargain the minimum although you will think that the price you wanted to say is ridicilous. I'll tell you what, I bought a imitation Giorgio Armani jacket for RMB90.00 from the opening price of RMB1400.00. Crazy huh?

    1) Imitation item such as cloth, jacket, shoes, watches etc. 2) Freshwater pearl. 3) Football / Soccer jersey

Bringing RMB1000.00 is considered good enough to have you to bring lots of plastic bags full of items to your hotel room.

    Shop Til You Drop
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many people recommend Nanjing Lu for shopping in Shanghai. This is a good place, if you're looking for high-end goods and the big brands. But to me, you can find these shops in major cities around the world, and you're not going to find it any cheaper in Shanghai. So I prefer to give it a miss. Along Shan Xi Nan Lu, there are entire streets of shops dedicated to outlet fashion. Many big names manufacture in China, and these shops carry factory overruns or samples, so sometimes you get stuff even before they are launched in the new season. You can get clothes and shoes at a very reasonable price, but as with normal outlet shopping, look out for manufacturing defects. Another great street is Huai Hai Zhong Lu and Chang Shu Lu. Similar concept as Shan Xi Nan Lu, just even more shops to choose from. You just got to be mindful that some shops sell the real thing, but some others sell fakes as well. So if you have a local friend who's into the shopping scene, try to get tips on which shops to go to. Bring cash as well, as many shops don't accept credit cards.

Ka De Club: The Secret DVD Store
  • Tip Rating:
  • Update! The old store is closed and they have moved to two new locations. This club says it is an internet club in Chinese on its sign, but look inside and you will see only one computer and a few tables. Go to the back right of the shop, through the door into a hallway and enter the first door on the right. Here you will find the best collection of pirate DVDs and CDs in Shanghai. You will also find the room full of westerners who also know the secret! News Flash! They also have a second store at Dagu Road. This is near the Four Seasons Hotel and off Shi Men Road and between Wei Hai and Yanan Roads.

    DVDs and Cds

10 to 40 RMB, but the quality of the DVDs is better than street quality

Xiang Yang Market Place: Cheap shopping

  • Old Xiang Yang market place - Shanghai
    Old Xiang Yang market place

Xiang Yang market place is full of clothes, bags, table clothing etc but do remember to check the quality before buying. This is a real bargainer's paradise. I would call the market as a "Fake Market" but hey, one can do really good shopping there. The New Xiang Yang Market has been relocated The address is : Shanghai Hong Qiao Datong Tang Building No. 461 Jin Hui Road

There are plenty of things to buy from scarfs to fake handbag's. From souvenirs to jeans.

Bargain, bargain bargain - thats my advise. As an extreme example: a girl asked 180yuan for a hairpin (like two fingers to put your hair up) and we ended up paying 4 yuan to her. This was because I had seen similar hairpins in a local groceries for 3 yuan and I told her that.

The Xiang Yang Market: Found! The New Location
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the market that began as a street market called Hua Ting Market. A few years back, the local government made a new location for the market on Huaihai road and it became Xiang Yang Market after a bordering street name. This summer, they were forced to move again. The market is now located inside the subway station under the Science and Technology Museum in Pudong. It is easy to find. Just take the number 2 subway toward Pudong and get off at the Science and Technology building. Take the escalator up to the exit level and look around or ask someone. It is in the ticketing level. The market is about the same size as the old market, but it is in the subway station and it is airconditioned. You can get all the same bargains without sweating in the Shanghai sun.

How about a large rolling computer bag from the company that makes the Swiss Army knife for 25 dollars. You can ge anything in clothing, toys, luggage and junk here. You also can get the copy Rolex watches and DVDs.

See my other article about techniques for shopping here. Prices are low, but you can bargain lower if you know how.

Xiang Yang Rd.: All famous world brands are here!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Shanghai wants to attract the people from all over the world, in all good and bad ways. On this street, you will find all famous world brand and the price is bloody cheap. Reason? Because those were copies! Not sure of the qualify. But some are indeed quite good. If you wish to bring something for your friends, get some from here. You will feel amazed. The golden rule to have good deals from here is to bargin, with at least half of price to what the sellers tell you firstly. Pls don't feel shamed of the barginning if you cherish your money. Also try to have an analysis on the price from different shops and dont feel sorry if you only ask about price because goods are everywhere on this street. The update on this tip: In order to bring better fame for the city, Shanghai government has torn down this place while moving some shops into Scientific Museum, where you can reach there by Metro No.2. The place is no longer busy as Xiang Yang market, but you can still try there for some cheap products.

ie: 10 USD to buy a Gucci wallet

  • The souvenir shops in Yuyuan Garden Bazaar, with their colourful rows of fans, tea sets etc, are very attractive, and the salespeople are quite persuasive, but you can buy the same items from stalls in the little alleyways leading off from Nanjing Road, for half the price.

Xiangyang clothings and souvenir market: Cheap clothings and souvenirs
  • Tip Rating:
  • The market is located opposite the Xiangyang Park along Huai Hai Zhong Road (nearest metro station is Shanxi Nan Road Stop). The market consists of hundreds of small stores selling many things - apparels (children, adult), imitation goods, silk scarves, bags, cushion covers, tablerunners, jewellery, chinese decorations, shoes and many more. As I have mentioned in the 'Tourist traps' section, one will have to bargain real hard at this market as very often, asking prices are skyhigh especially for foreigners. I can't really advise on what's the lowest possible prices to bargain for...but I did manage to get a silk scarve for 25RMB, a haversack for 60RMB, a set of baby chinese custume for 50RMB. I'm not that good a bargainer (i pretty much just asked for slightly less than 1/2 of the asking price)...so an expert bargainer will probably be able to get much lower prices.

If you are into chinois-theme home furnishings, do check out the cushion covers, tablecloths, tablerunners, fabric placemats and coasters. Ladies might want to buy some silk scarves for yourselves or as gifts for friends. Clothings and shoes are reasonably cheap for both men and women. Unfortunately, I was there during winter so the shops are carrying mainly winter clothings and footwear which aren't really suitable for wear in sunny Singapore.

Keep your credit cards in the hotel. Expect to pay cash at the stores. Between 15-30RMB for silk scarves of various sizes, 20-50RMB for children's clothings, 30-60RMB for medium size haversacks. These are based on my personal experiences, perhaps if you have a local friend, he/she might be able to advise more accurately on pricing of goods.
