 | Shanghai Shopping | Tips 171 - 180 of 199 | | Popular Shopping | Other Shopping Tips | All Tips (199) Chinese books, dictionaries, stationery, DVDs etc.... these are important tools for me and hubby (I need these for teaching and he uses them in his job as an editor). The best place to buy all these stuff is of course China. We went to the Shanghai Book Mall, the largest book store in Shanghai, to get our "supplies". It has 6 levels, all full of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs etc.

USed to be the largest department store in Shanghai and I believe it is one of the first few (the first should be Hua Lian, I think) department store in Shanghai. IT has gone thru a few facelift and it has become a modern depratment store
Shoes!! Try the Basement 1 level. The whole floor is selling shoes. Shoes are very cheap and of good quality.
Most of the shoes are about 200-250 RMB (less than US$30). Leave a Comment Theme: ShoesAddress: Nanjing Dong Lu

Haha! My hotel happened to oversee a clothes wholesale market and so we went! Hugh, each building is around 4 to 5 storeys high and there are at least around 5 buildings in that area selling wholesale clothes. Shanghai is famous for it's clothes being trendy and well tailored. Indeed, the clothes I saw at the various clothes wholesale buildings, are, of better quality than those I found in Guangzhou. Clothes, hats, undergarments, stockings, socks, jackets etc. Many stalls attend to retail sales too.
Wholesale price if you're buying whoelsale. You can still bargain there even if you're buying retail (means you are buying only a piece of two, not bulk). Theme: Women's ClothesAddress: Qi Pu LuDirections: Between Haining Rd and Qufu Rd. Ask around the people over there, this wholesale market is quite famous that most people will be able guide you.

Just saw the news (in Chinese): http://news.sh.sina.com.cn/20031129/221422774.shtml Shanghai desperately needs professional bakers: need 14K in this industry. If you know how to bake, or have experience as a pastry chef etc, you could be paid as RMB 10K/month (1US$=8.3 RMB). Have fun baking! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

China is one of the best places to buy silk and Shanghai is no exception. The silk can be bought as a fabric or readymade garment, if you don't know how to make clothes by yourself. Silk King is a multistorey silk and wool shop on the busy shopping street Nanjing Road. There are several different qualities of silk and cashmere wool available, in all the colours of the rainbow + black and white. The store has also several branches around the city. Unfortunately, all the material is not what it looks like and some fabrics are advertised as silk, but are something artificially fabricated. If you don't know the difference -- in other words, you are buying for your wife or girlfriend -- be careful. The staff doesn't speak good English, or English at all, so you may end up buying something that you really didn't want to purchase. If you have more time to spend, I'd suggest to go to Dongjiadu cloth market for better bargains. Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftAddress: 66 Nanjing Road

If you are located in Pudong, for example in Grand Hyatt or Intercontinental Pudong, you don't have to cross the river to do some serious shopping. Super Brand Mall is the biggest lure on this side of the river, specialising mostly to Chinese and Asian brands. The ground floor of the mall has the biggest shoe store that I've ever seen; Al Bundy would be green with envy. The goods are not always of top quality, but you can find also real bargains. The mall contains also a cinema, fast food joints and several reasonably priced restaurants, located on the upper floors. Three on the Bund is a newly developed collection of eclectic fashion shops and restaurants just next to the Bund. The ground floor hosts a few high-end stores, such as Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani, ready to drain your wallet. The place is designed with an edge, especially Giorgio Armani's store is a worth of visit for the interior only. Browsing through the fares is free, so why don't you drop in? There is also an art gallery on the upper floors that provides some cheap thrills. The restaurants are gourmet orientated, so the price is higher than in Shanghai in general.
