A view from one of the mall restaurants by Travelchili Next to the Oriental Pearl Tower you can find a huge and very modern shopping mall. You can find many local and foreign stores there, selling clothes, shoes, bags, perfumes, make-up, stationery, etc. On the top floor (I think it was the fifth), you can find a row of restaurants. Some of them offer local Chinese cuisine, but there are some other options like Thai, Italian, and vegetarian restaurants as well. Leave a Comment Theme: Women's Clothes

by nomadig The best way to buy cloth, were it silk, cashmere, satin or something completely different, is to go to Dongjiadu cloth market. There are several dozens of stalls selling all the colours and materials you need to make the next cocktail dress or something else. The outside shops sell mostly silk and rayon, some odd cashmere stalls are there, too. Inside, the variety increases. The shopkeepers speak a little English, but pocket calculator and gestures usually convey the message. There are also tailors that can make you the item you want with the material you want. Be prepaped to tolerate some pestering as some sellers are keen to give you the best price and quality. The market is not easily accessible with public transporation, but fortunately taxis are cheap and plentiful. Remember to have the address written in Chinese or a Chinese map with you.
Silk and cashmere have the best discounts compared to Western countries. Be aware of the quality and authenticity. Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftAddress: Dongjiadu LuDirections: It's best to take a taxi to and fro.

Xiangyang Market (Xiangyang Shi Chang) is a flea market located just off Huahai Zhong Lu. It is a collection of several hundred stalls selling fake branded goods.
You can get just about any fake branded item - Prada, Gucci, Bulgari, Louis Vuitton clothes, Omega, Rolex watches, Callaway golf clubs etc.
You must bargain hard. As a rule, slash the price to 20 - 30% of the original quoted price. Leave a Comment Theme: Discount StoreAddress: Xiangyang Shi ChangDirections: It is located off Huahai Zhong Lu. Take a taxi to the place - it is the most convenient.

Inside Grand Gateway by cheezecake_deli Most tourists don't get to Xujiahui, a prime residential and shopping district in Puxi just southwest of the city centre, unless they are staying at one of the mid-range hotels here. Five roads meet at the busy junction above Xujiahui metro station, at which five large shopping malls are found: Grand Gateway, Pacific, Number 6, Oriental and Meiluocheng. Xujiahui metro station itself has an underground mall with countless small shops. Unlike Nanjing and Huaihai roads, the shops here generally sell things that ordinary Shanghai residents want to buy!
Everyday things.
Prices are more reasonable compared to Huaihai or Nanjing roads. Theme: Department StoreAddress: XujiahuiDirections: Nearest metro: Xujiahui.

Kites by Travelchili Whereever I traveled in China, I always saw kids and families flying kites. It seemed like something people really enjoyed doing over there. I just loved looking at the colorful kites and thought that they'd make a great gift if you have children. Leave a Comment Theme: Gifts

by xiao This market features hundreds of stalls selling bales of fabric at ridiculously low prices, from traditional Chinese silk and Thai silk to cotton, linen, wool, and cashmere, though the heavier fabrics are only carried during the colder months. Many stalls have their own in-house tailors who can stitch you a suit, or anything else you want, at rates that are less than half what you'd pay at retail outlets. Tailoring ain't fantastic but if you bring a sample, they could make the same copy. Turnaround is usually a week or more. Open daily from 9am to 5pm. Getting a taxi out of the market area at 5 is extremely difficult, try to leave earlier or much later.
You can make anything, even lycra, shimmery dancewear for your tango/belly dance class, bags and shoes. Check out shop #107 for inexpensive Thai silk. You can get some at USD4 per meter.
Do bargain. I got a queen size duvet covers and 2 pillow cases (300 thread) for RMB200. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Update on 18 Apr 2006: Market has recently moved from Dongjiadu Lu to a new 3 storey building on Lujiabang Lu, by NanCang Jie. (further down from the old market)

by nepalgoods Even though I have not been to Shanghai in the last 10 years, so I am getting good informations form our clients. This Dongtai Antiques Market was very much recommended to me. This market has hundreds of stalls and many permanent shops along a short lane Dealers specialize in antiques, curios, porcelain, furniture, jewelry, baskets, bamboo and wood carvings, birds, flowers, goldfish, and nostalgic bric-a-brac from colonial and revolutionary days (especially Mao memorabilia). When it rains, most stalls aren't open, but the stores are. Open daily from 9am to 5pm. Leave a Comment Theme: AntiquesDirections: The Market is located on Dongtai Lu and Liuhe Lu, 1 block west of Xizang Nan Lu, Luwan (about 3 blocks south of Huaihai Lu).

Pacific Digital Plazas 1 and 2 are good starting points for hunting down any IT gadgets. The first floor sells mostly laptops and PDA styled gadgets. There is also a miniscule Apple store in the middle of the Plaza 2. The upper floor have mixed selection of shops, but if you're after components, you have to venture these floor carefully. The atmosphere is hectic, as there are numerous customers and clerks dealing on a single matter, and everybody is talking on a loud voice. Ah, the joys of Chinese retail business.... The IT stuff has heavy import taxes in China, so the prices are not competetive with Singapore, but for us Europeans, there can be something worth buying for. In this market you can get tailor-made dresses and suits. They will measure you and make it in two or three days. You just pick a certain material (such as cashmere, silk or cotton) and show them a picture of how the suit or dress shall look alike. Even a selfmade drawing will do it.
You will have to bargain the price. I got cashmere trousers, a jacket and a west for 830 RMB altogether. BUT BE AWARE! Quality has its price: Probably the work is not so accurate and maybe it will unseam or so. Anyhow, I am content with my suit! :) Leave a Comment Theme: Men's ClothesAddress: Dongjiadu RoadDirections: Walk Zhongshan Nanlu (parallel to the Huangpu River) south until you cross Dongjiadu Lu (about 1km north of Nanpu Bridge). Walk Dongjiadu Lu to the west, you'll see the textile market on the left (south) side of the road.

The underground shopping street is under People's Square. It's pretty big shopping center. You can escape the heat during the day and wander abit underground. There are loads of women's shops -- clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories. The price there is average like most shops in the city.
