Nanjing Road: Upmarket shopping in Shanghai

  • Neon street of Shanghai, Nanjing Road - Shanghai
    Neon street of Shanghai,
    Nanjing Road

There are just so many departmental stores along Nanjing Road selling all kinds of clothings, footwear, bags, books, music/movie CDs, food, jewellery, arts and crafts. It's like the Orchard Road of Singapore (major shopping district) - much bigger scale perhaps! The streets are usually packed with locals and tourists (even the rain will not deter them from doing their shopping!). There are also many eateries along Nanjing Road so you can shop, rest, eat and shop again the entire day! The departmental stores carry both local and overseas brands so you can shop to your heart's content.

Clothings, shoes and bags. As many of the goods are produced in China, the prices are much lower as compared to other countries. There are also many tailors doing custom-made suits, dresses and qipao (traditional chinese costume for ladies - also known as cheongsum).

For the chinese brands, a ladies' suit will range from 100-500RMB. Genuine leather jackets for ladies will cost 1,500-4,000RMB. Ladies lingerie (bras) are in the average range of 200-400RMB. Imported branded cosmetics might be more expensive as compared to Singapore. Ladies shoes on average range from 100-400RMB

The whole area consists of departmental stores, small shops as well as street-size stalls. Most of the stores are housed in anciet chinese architectural designed buildings so you can shop and sightsee at the same time!

As usual, you can find a wide variety of silk items, clothings, home furnishings, jewellery, food products as well as chinese arts and crafts. There are also street performances such as chinese puppets, acrobatic performances and musicals.

The Yu Yuan Garden is also located in the vicinity and well worth a visit as it's really beautiful with very nice landscaping and traditional chinese architectures.

I love chinese crafts such as paper cutting, copper wire designs (made into signs) and chinese seals carving. You can also get to see how the craft masters do the pieces with their nifty hands. The paper cuttings with extremely intricate designs are sold on their own or in frames. You can also customise the paper cuttings by adding names and/or greetings.

How about making a chinese seal with your name so that you can use it on your correspondence and personal effects?

Or buy some chinese tea - the variety is just amazing with different teas proclaiming different health benefits! There are also many chinese food products ranging from chinese biscuits, candies to herbs and preserved meats.

I paid 120RMB for 2 medium size paper cuttings with frames. 70RMB for a copper-wire sign with both english and chinese names in a frame.

  • I have been there just once and I think it is a good place to buy genuine products with reasonable price . If you have nothing to do during the weekends, that is a good choice you can spend whole day there.

It is divided into 3 parts:

    A.Top brands , like PRADA, FENDI, CHANNEL. BUBERRY , DIOR ,ARMANI (A102),GIVENCHY (A125), DUNHILL (A103), HUGO BOSS(A109)

B.Unique middle price brand and sports brand and some national brands, like The North Face(B149),COLUMBIA(B115),LAFUMA(B157)

C.Restaurants and fast foods, like KFC(C213),BE FOR TIMES(B180)

Huaihai Road is Shanghai's answer to New York's 5th Avenue, Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive, or Rome's Via Veneto.

On this road you can find every brand name imaginable, as well as numerous local shops, stores, and malls all along both sides of the street.

This is NOT the place to get local antiques, trinkets, or haggle over gifts for people back home. This street is for serious shoppers who like to get up early, and shop until the stores close late at night.

Women clothes, men's clothes, shoes, accessories, perfume, etc. etc. etc.

As much as your credit card(s) has available.

Xiang Yang Market - Heaven for Knock Offs
  • Tip Rating:

  • This is a mecca for bargain hunters & always frequented by foreign tourists to shop for imitation goods / knock offs.

Remember to bargain hard & slash the price up to 70% if you want your LV bag, Gucci handbag, Nike shoes or Cartier watch. Goods made in Korea are of better quality.

Just across the Xiang Yang Market, in the downtown area, ia s sight Malaysians will instantly recognise: a Parkson department store.

NOTE: XIANG YANG MARKET WAS OFFICIALLY CLOSED DOWN ON 1/7/2006 FOR GOOD.

All your favourite brand names for clothes, shoes, watches, luggage bags, sunglasses, perfumes, handbags, T-shirts and so on.

  • We used to go to Xiangyang Market to buy the good stuff from clothing to shoes and software or DVDs. After closure of Xiangyang Market, the merchants have to move to new locations. One of them is on the Nanjingxi lu No.580. 5 Floors of all stuff you need.

all the stuff you want is here from clothing to software, from chinese traditona clothing to souvenirs. you name it.

you got to know how to bargain. my suggestion go to carrefour around the corner and check for the prices of things without brand you want there and get back to the market

Najing East Road (Nanjing Dong Lu) was the premier shopping road in China back in the 1920s and 1930s during Shanghai's heydays. It was here that the first four department stores in China were built (by Guangdong merchants). These stores introduced fixed pricing and mass advertisement to China, and are still here at Nanjing East Road, though their names have changed and interiors modernised. Today's Nanjing East Road has been pedestrianised, but remains popular as ever, full of shops and cafes. Several famous Chinese shops selling foodstuff, tea and silk are found here.

Nanjing East Road can be extremely crowded especially at weekends (think London's Oxford Street on Saturdays x2), so watch your belongings.

    Almost anything is available!

How much can you afford to spend?!

  • A great concentration of shopping malls can be found at Xu Jia Hui. For folks loving to flex their shopping muscles, this is one place to be as you can hop from one mall to another and spend your entire day here going giddy with shop till you drop in air-con comfort.

There are so many shop/outlet to choose and to buy gems & crystals. Some shops with sales person that cannot communicate at all in English. But some can speak English very well. By choosing an English speaking sales personel, we can bargain more efficiently and even the most important factor is we could learn and know more about the gemstones / crystal that we wanted to buy.

Gemstones is very straight forward, you will be given a table with your month of birth and you may select 1 from 3 gemstone relates to your month or hororscope. As for the pictures inside a crystal sourvenir, horse is for success, fish is for health, water & mountain is for wealth and cat is for happiness.

You may use your charge card or credit card here even.

I went to 3 outlets and bought :-

    1) Aquamarine Bracelet at RMB360.00
    2) Garney Bracelet at RMB190.00
    3) Emerald Bracelet at RMB350.00
    4) Citrine Bracelet at RMB200.00
    5) Tourmaline Bracelet at RMB400.00
    6) 4pcs medium size round Crytal Souvenir (with stand and pictures inside the rounded shape crystal) at RMB220.00 (RMB55.00 each). Being sold for RMB135.00 at Pudong Airport.
    7) 1pc large size round Crytal Souvenir (with stand and pictures inside the rounded shape crystal) at RMB180.00. Being sold for RMB360.00 at Pudong Airport.
