DongJiaDu Cloth Market: A need for silk, cotton or some other cloth?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Outside the OLD cloth market place - Shanghai

If you want to buy cloth; silk, cashmere, satin or something completely different, go to DongJiaDu cloth market. There are several dozens of stalls selling all the colours and materials you need to make the curtains in your living room, a suit for your husband or bedclothes to your bed. The whole street is full of cloth shops and stalls but the actual hall of cloth stalls is are near at the ZhongShan Rd and DongJia Du Rd's junction on the left side. UPDATE 24APR 2006 on Shanghai Forum was said that this place has moved to It's 399 Lujiabang Lu. Near the old location.

The shopkeepers speak a little English, but pocket calculator, pen and paper and gestures usually convey the message. There are tailors that can make you the item you want with the material you want by your instructions. A word of warning: check the quality of the tailor in beforehand if possible. Also Check the material every time you buy something.

Stall number 53 had (year 04) had a good tailor (kitchen curtains) but another stall (living room curtains) was not good (patters printed on the cloth did not match in the pair of curtains I bought...so ALWAYS check the quality!)

    Cloths!

Just an example: I paid for a metre of pure silk 55 yuan. Yes, it required a lots of bargaining.

Dongtai Lu Antique Market: 'Antique' Market

    Market? You Decide

The market sells a variety (a wide variety) of antiques. From 'little red books' to vases, to masks, to old (looking) radios, to propaganda posters and a host of things I just ignored becuase it was too much.

Not a lot of tourists here (on the day I went) and not too hectic (like Yu Gardens Bazaar).

Bargin a lot. I bought my items for an average of 1/3rd of the first given price. Remember these probably aren't antiques, so just buy what looks good. Don't expect to have a 'find' here.

Nanjin Road.: Shopping in China's most important shopping St.

    Nightlife in Nanjing Rd.

Nanjing Rd is one of the longest shopping streets in the world. 3.4-mile-long road starting at the Bund in the east and ending in the west at the junction of Jingan Temple and Yan'an West Street.

It is a historical landmark too. After the Opium War (1839-1842), Shanghai became a treaty port. Nanjing Road was first the British Concession, then the International Settlement. Importing large quantities of foreign goods, it became the earliest shopping street in Shanghai.

Today is lined with all sort of fashionable shops and restaurants.

I made some good shopping myself here.
    V. recommended. Although in my opinion it does not beat the Hong Kong shopping markets and streets.

    Clothes, shoes, you name.
    Anything can be found here.

As little or as much as you want!

    Old Street: Gifts from Shanghai

If you're interested to bring items that are typically Chinese, go to Shanghai Old Town, Central Fang Bang road that contains remodelled old town shops selling all kinds of touristy gimmicks.

The street is a little tacky, but it can be great fun to browse the shops and try to figure whether some wood carving would fit over the fireplace. Remember, that the items are not antique, only recently made and antiqued.

The street life is also fun to watch, as the cars and scooters are blowing horns to cyclist and walkers, and the whole traffic looks like a chaos to a Westener. There are some restaurants and cafes nearby, including also the omnipresent McDonald's and KFC. The best way to get there is to take a taxi.

    Don't know: Buy a flag
  • Tip Rating:
  • Shanghai is a great place to buy all kinds of stuff! Art supplies are cheap and plentiful. I bought some pretty nice scroll paintings for a cheap price. There are some expensive ones to. I guess it depends on the artist. I had wanted to buy a flag but never saw one that I liked.

    Hotwind: Hot here!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This tip is also especially for those who would come and live in Shanghai for a while. In Hotwind, you will find clothes, backpacks, shoes, sporting goods in brands that you can only find in western countries. Price here is also cheaper than that in the US.

The new market.: Clothes, shoes, watches, bags, etc.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Now that the Xiangyang market is now this is one of the new locations where you can get just about anything. The shop owners are very insistent and will practically drag you into their shops. Remember to bargain hard, start at about 15-20% of the offerred price. Bargaining can be fun if you remain good-humoured and smile, smile, smile. You only get ripped off if you buy something you don't want .

Men's and women's clothes, shoes, bags, watches, just about anything.

I paid 50 yuan for business shirts, 200 for an Armani coat, 100 for Diesel shoes, you get the idea.

  • Address: Science and technology Musuem metro stop.
  • Directions: Metro line 2 (I think) and get off at the Science and Technology Museum stop. It's underground so it's right there. Some of the store owners hang around at the exits and will be more than happy to escort you, whether you are willing or not, to their shop.

Yuyuan Baazar: Be a smart consumer
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can get almost everything made in China. From table cloth, silk clothes and scarf, fake handbags and watches. Make sure you bargain as low as 70% from its price cause I am sure you are going to get what you want. If not just fake it as if your are not keen and intended to leave, I am sure they will call you and ask how much you want it for. That is the tricks.

Look for jade, silk, saltwater pearls and sovenirs.

    30% from opening price.

  • Theme: Local Craft
  • Directions: I just get a cab...... and ask to be send to Yuyuan Garden. I find that the rate is reasonable. They will use meter. From Yuyuan to your place, make sure you ask the taxi driver to use meter. If not they will charge you a flat rate which is way too high.

City Supermarket: You may also find what you want here
  • Tip Rating:
  • I give this tip especially for those who just got to Shanghai and would live here for a period of time. I bet you would miss some food/other things too from your country but you can't find it in other stores/super markets here in Shanghai. Try city supermarket. You will find a lot of things that you can't find in other stores. Most foreigners, Cantonese, Taiwanese who live in Shanghai shop here often.

it provides everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, to cheeses, spices, meats, wines and beer, also offers services such as dry cleaning and film development. Besides of food, there are also a lot of other stuff you need for your house..

Price is very reasonable here, and they offer free delivery service too.

Every Shop Possible: Let the calculator do the talking
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Shanghai, let the calculator be your negotiator. There is little point trying to bargain through hand signals when neither of you speak the same langauage. So point to the calculator (which is always at hand) and come to an agreed upon price. Generally, the vendor prefers to do it his way. It more private and they don't other to hear what prices they're give you.
