There are many Buddhists in Shanghai, this is one of their temples. Felt a little uneasy as a tourist wandering around amongst people praying, but noone seemed too bothered. a serene place and well worth a visit

The Jade Buddha temple stands in the place of an old temple built in 1882, to keep two jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen.
This original temple was destroyed during the revolution that ended the Dynasty and the new one that replaced it was called by the people The Jade Buddha Temple.
There are not one but two Buddhas and they are are carved in two blocks of white jade.
The sitting Buddha (190 cm tall) is a meditating oneand the recumbent one (96 cm long) is in the so-called "lucky repose" position (see pic).
The temple keeps as well other statues of heroes and warriors and more than 7,000 Dazang sutras which are unique relics of the Buddhist religion.

Shanghai's most famous Buddhist temple is cramped in between a row of otherwise rather undistinguished buildings, and is itself, not especially attractively designed... But it does have one saving grace that makes it a definite must see: a 2 meter high, 1000 kg, shimmering white jade Buddha...! This Buddha statue is so great that I'm glad I didn't take a photo because it's better that you see it in person... The Buddha that you see in this photo is not the white jade Buddha, but a reclining Buddha from another part of the temple...

This is the most famous Buddhist Temple in Shanghai.
In 1882 the monk Huigen brought 5 jade buddha statues from Burma. He left 2 of them in Shanghai building a temple there to keep them. In 1918 the old temple burned and the present one was built.
The temple consists of three main halls and two courtyards. The first hall is Tianwand Dian Hall, the second is Daxiong Baodian, and the third is the Jade Buddha Tower. The white jade buddha, which was brought from Burma, is two meters high and encrusted with jewels weighing in at 1,000 kg.

The Yufo (Jade Buddha) Temple With a history of more than 100 years, is one of the well-known Buddhist temples in Shanghai. The temple was built in 1882, covering an area of 8,000 square meters. The temple got its name because of the two statues of Sakyamuni brought from Burma - one in standing position and one in sitting position. The seated Buddha statue is as high as 1.9 meters, carved from a complete white jade piece. It is said to weigh 1,000 kilograms, ornamented with jewels. It is an art treasure. The temple also houses large numbers of ancient carvings, paintings and precious Buddhist cultural relics. (Admission)

On my lasts day in china, I made my way into the Jade Buddha Temple. One must not let the outside face of the building deter you to the beautiful statues inside. The aromatic incense that floats through the air on the premises inside the Jade Buddha Temple gets any visitor in the temple visit mood. Many visitors awe in amazement of the infamous Jaded Buddha. In addition, there are other beautiful statues on the Jade Buddha Temple of Shanghai.
