The Urban Planning Museum is a fun smaller museum located in Renmin Square. Its exhibits focus on Shanghai's buildings and infrastructure, including their history. The highlight of the museum is a large scale model of the city in which you can see every building, including the ones that are under construction. To make it more fun, the show the city model under both daytime and nightime lighting.

Another highlight of the museum is a simulated areial ride over and through the city, which highlights many of its famous sights on a surround screen that gives you the illusion of motion. We also enjoyed the historic photographs of the Bund, as well as the exhibit outlining the growth of the city's airports.

The museum is closed on Mondays (except national holidays).

This exhibition hall would be a great start of your Shanghai Experience. It exhibits the history, the present, and the future plans of the Shanghai Development. It has many displays of attractions in Shanghai in mini architectural models. It gets you the idea whether it is worth your time to visit those places. During my visit, it exhibits its present World Expo 2010. This would be a good place to start your Shanghai trip. You should not miss this place if you are visiting the People's Square.

    Entrance: Y30/Adult.

    Opening Hours: Tue-Thu 9am-4pm, Fri-Sun 9am-5pm; closed on Monday.

OK the title of this places puts you off but don't let it as it offers a fascinating insight into the next chapter in Shanghai's evolution. It also displays a lot of black and white photos of historic city scenes and buildings but the exhibition hall's pièce de résistance is a huge scale model of the city (see next tip). The exhibition really goes into great details through plans, models and pictures, the extent of the future development of the city which is actually quite fascinating.

    Admission: Y30.

Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall City model

by Willettsworld Written Jun 22, 2009

This is the huge scale model of the city inside the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall in People's Square. The model shows all existing and approved buildings. You can view the model at "ground level", or ascend a gallery running around it for views from above. The model is intended to represent the entire city, including all planned developments. However, a few stout pillars, necessitated by the building design, penetrate the scale model. This means certain areas are missing from the model, and views of the model are sometimes obscured by the columns. If you hang around long enough, the lights are dipped so as to simulate night-time and the model is illuminated.

    Admission: Y30.

    Urban Planning Centre of Shanghai

by althaus Written Jul 5, 2007

There is this Urban Planning Center near the Shanghai Museum. This place showcases the growth of Shanghai and has a model of the city to scale on the top few floors. It is a very nice place to visit to learn on the growth of the city and what is being planned by the city municipal authorities. Interactive displays and well maintained exhibits make it a very suitable place for families to visit.

    Shanghai miniature

Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre displays the past, present and future of city planning and construction of the Shanghai Metropolis. Thus, if you're a history buff, and is also interested in the future (at least of Shanghai), then, you can take a peek inside.

    Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre

Shanghai's Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, located on the northern side of People's Square (Ren Min Guang Chang) by People's Avenue (Ren Min Da Dao), is actually not a bad place to start your visit to Shanghai. The centre showcases the architectural history and future of the city. There are faded photographs and maps of old Shanghai, as well as exhibits on the future urban structure of the megacity. The exhibition is quite extensive, covering not just the development of commercial Pudong, but also outlying satellite towns and issues involved in managing the growth of a city of Shanghai's scale. The highlight is a model of the city envisioned in 2020, which occupies a whole floor and which can be viewed at eye level or from above.

    Entry fee is RMB30.

    main model...

it has a total floor space of 19 thousand square meters, tourists can see the changes of the leased territory, the achievements of Shanghai in urban planning and construction since the reform and opening-up of the country, in particular, since the 1990s. Also they can see the bright future of Shanghai there. The main model of urban planning, which is in the proportion of 1:2000, exhibits the urban geography and scenery and that's very fascinating.. It is the world's biggest model of urban planning. but please dont be lazy and go upstairs till last floor, because this huge model is displayed there, and on the first floor there is a small model..not so impressive...some people just see that small model and go away..thinking what is it all about?

    Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall

This museum was opened in February 2000. An interesting tour of where the city has been and where it is going. It shows how Shanghai will look like in a couple of decades. The centerpiece on the 3/F is a huge model of the city as it is now. In the basement, old Shanghai is rebuilt with house entrances, cobble stone ways and operating shops and teahouses.

SHANGHAI URBAN PLANNING EXHIBITION HALL: Largest planning model in the world with an area of more than 600 sq. m showing the urban physical form of the area within the Inner Ring Road in 2002.

The 4 giant steel caps on top of the building symbolise the city flower - magnolia.
