Rigged Taxi Meters Part 2 of 2

    6. as soon as you think you may be getting ripped off, quietly write down the driver's identification card number, including his name, the vehicle number, and the taxi company name. Do not let the driver know you are doing this until you are finished, otherwise he will take the card off his dash board and hide it from you. After you have secured the details, make it clear that you will report him.

    7. If you think something is really wrong, do not pay the driver If he is cheating you, you are not obliged to pay him. In fact, if a taxi driver does not use his meter you are not obliged to pay anything - it says so in the "rules of carriage" posted in the back seat of all taxis.

Be careful not to confront the driver if you are in a part of town where it would be bad to be forced to get out of the taxi (e.g. on a highway where no other taxis would or could stop to pick you up). Otherwise you can force his hand by getting out - but be careful if your luggage is in the trunk, then he has the upper hand! I try to keep my luggage with me in the back seat if I suspect I may be getting into a dodgy vehicle.

    Hope this helps.

Shanghai is a sprawling city. Fortunately, most of the tourist sights are packed together and concentrated around the Bund, Nanjing Lu, Huaihai Lu, Pudong and Xujiahui areas. Besides the subway, taxis are a good form of transportation around Shanghai especially for areas that are not accessible directly by the subway. There are many taxis cruising around in the city and they come in different colours representing different taxi companies. The flagdown fare is RMB11 for the first 3 km and 2 RMB per km thereafter. When you reach your destination, the taxi driver will print you a receipt stating the time you boarded, time you alighted and the fare.
Most taxi drivers in Shanghai do not speak English. If you do not speak Putonghua (Mandarin), please get someone to write down the destination in Chinese.

A large amount of it, especially the detailed information like pickup times and routes are all in Chinese.

The transportation is excellent for the general public in Shanghai, with bus, underground, taxis and trains that can get you anywhere just about. They have one of the worlds fastest trains, the MagLev, which can get you from RPV Airport to the Pudong district for about 100 Yuan. It beats a Taxi drive by 50 minutes and costs about 150 Yuan less. Taxi drivers are required to take two courses, Drive by Braille and Drive by Horn, so bring a 10 mg. Valium for your first ride.

Fares are as little as 1 Yuan for a bus ride, and a train with assigned seating and air conditioning to Suzhou, about 80 kilometers away is only 23 Yuan. The Chinese trains with sleepers are very comfortable and save a hotel bill if you take one over night. The beer is cold. Reme.ber that everyone amost uses the trains and bus lines, and a lot of people leave Shanghai early on the weekends, so if you plan to go out of town get your ticket in advance.

A great map of the Shanghai rail Subway System routes can be found on google Earth (google earth dot com ).

I recomend the following website for information about getting around Shanghai. The forums can be searched for an answer (the best way) or you can just post a question.

  • The hotel shuttle bus is the non- stop line between hotels in downtown area and Pudong International Airport.
Interval time of hotel shuttle bus is about 1 hour. I have been told the hotel busses don't always run and a taxi is better.

    Hotel Shuttle Bus Line A
City Hotel, Okura Garden Hotel, Jinjiang Hotel, Jinjiang Tower, Shanghai YMCA Hotel, Pudong Airport

    Hotel Shuttle Bus Line B
Jing'an Hotel, Equatorial Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Shanghai Hotel, Pudong Airport

    Hotel Shuttle Bus Line C
Metropole Hotel, Broadway Mansions Hotel, Peace Hotel, Sofitel Hyland Hotel, Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, Central Hotel Shanghai, Pudong Airport

    Hotel Shuttle Bus Line D
Regal Shanghai East Asia Hotel, Olympic Hotel, Huating Hotel, Jianguo Hotel, Jinxuan Hotel, Pudong Airport

    Hotel Shuttle Bus Line E
Da Zhong Merrylin Hotel, Hongqiao State Guest Hotel, Xijiao State Guest Hotel, New Garden Hotel, Shanghai Worldfield Convention Hotel, Marriott Hotel, Cypress Hotel, Yihe Longbai Hotel Pudong Airport

    Hotel Shuttle Bus Line H
Regal International East Asia Hotel, Hengshan Hotel, Xingguo Hotel, Crowne Plaza Shanghai, Renaissance Yangtze Shanghai Hotel, Rainbow Hotel, Pudong Airport

I recommend taking a taxi. This is especially true if you have two or more people and luggage.

I'll have pictures after my next trip this May.

shanghai's taxis are a better way to get around...and it's cheap and everywhere!
and funny thing-they are advertising popular brands at the back of first raw seats...it can be just a plate or small tv screen showing some advertising...
so there was also a thing that made me laugh much...they were showing a video promoting some ironing thing...showing it from different perspective, close ups, focused-non focused images , price was written in huge letters...add to this some chinese popular music...
my point is - maybe that's normal, but for me, russian citisen, it was rather unreal and very funny!!!
    couldnt stop laughing....

  • There are several busses from the Pudong airport to Shanghai. Line 1 is a nonstop to the old airport. Line 2 is a nonstop to the City Air Terminal (Jingan temple) downtown. It will take over an hour to get to the City Air Terminal. Line number 2 is 19 rmb

Please see the web site for other bus lines.

There are lots of local modern busses and trolleybuses. But it may be difficult to use them, as signs are in Chinese only.
