    Busses
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are lots of local modern busses and trolleybuses. But it may be difficult to use them, as signs are in Chinese only.

    Metro station
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is what a metro station looks from outside. Tickets can be bought from a cashier but don't too may single ones. Rumour has it that they are only valid on the day you buy them.

    Rent a bike
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are a good biker, rent a bicycle and see if you candle the bicycle traffic over there. And I am not kidding - the bicycle traffic there is as bad as the car traffic... BE SAFE!!

Rigged Taxi Meters in Shanghai - Part 1 of 2
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is also a transportation tip WARNING

It is my experience that Shanghai has the most credible and honest taxi drivers in China. Taking you the long way, rigging meters, refusing to use meters etc. is much less prevalent here than it is in some ohter cities in China. That said, beware!

Lately there have been an increase in the number of rigged taxi meters in Shanghai. Especially around the area of Longyang Lu, where the maglev drops off passengers coming from the Pudong airport, taxi drivers hang around and haggle fares with you as if you were in Manila. These fellows are up to no good. They try to get you to agree to a ridiculously high set fare, rather than use the meter (bad idea!). Even worse, some of them have rigged meters where the fare goes up at a rate much faster than in should. Here are my suggestions to protect yourself:

    1. Do not take a taxi if the driver calls out to you in English, no matter what.

    2. Do not take a taxi if the driver does not have his vehicle number ID tag displayed on his dash board. Make sure the photograph on the ID tag is really your driver.

    3. Do not agree to a flat fare unless you know what you are doing. If you have not been to Shanghai before, you do not know what you are doing.

    4. Try to know roughly what the taxi fare should be from your point of origin to your destination.

    5. If you don't know what route the driver should be taking, pull out a Shanghai map and act like you are following along. If you can really do it, great, but just putting on the show might be helpful.

From Singapore to Shanghai, direct flight
  • Tip Rating:
  • Only 3 airlines fly direct from Singapore to Shanghai. They are: Singapore Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Garuda Indonesia.

Garuda's fare is the cheapest among the 3.

I will not recommend China Eastern Airlines. See my link to the "Warning/Danger" tips below:

    Take the subway!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take the subway if you are in Shanghai if your destinations are within walking distance from the subway station.

There are clear signs and route map in each station. This will beat the heavy traffic and hassle of driving around or taking a cab.

Almost every time we went from a place A to place B we took a taxi as it is so cheap there. Can't remember exactly how much it costs but it was little (few euros for a kilometres drive anyway).

    My advise: take a taxi.

Ask the hotel front desk people to write the place you are going to in Chinese characters on paper and then give the piece of paper to your taxi driver. Also remember to take the hotel name card into your pocket and then, again, just show the card to a taxi driver.

Taxis are metered and are an excellent way to get around the city. Avoid people trying to get you in a car which is not a marked taxi, they will charge you silly prices. All taxis are metered and currently start at 11 RMB (14 RMB after 11pm I think), and then go by a mixture of distance and time. You can go a big distance on little money.

The subway is also a cheap and efficient means of travel. Obviously avoid it during rush peak periods, however use it any other time. It is modern and opening new lines all the time up to the opening of the 2010 Expo. Prices start at 2 RMB and go up to 5 RMB (at least I think that's the max!).

Buses are also a good means of transport, however more confusing to work out. You will need someone to explain which bus you need to go where unless you speak Chinese! Cost is silly cheap!

    Ride the metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • When traveling between major tourist sites in Shanghai, Anne and I took the metro. The trains were very spacious, air-conditioned, and safe, the ticketing system was easy to use as there is an "English" button you can use. The metro stations are all within close proximity to the attractions.

The easiest and hassle free way to travel between The Pearl Tower, Maglev station, Nanjing Street and the Shanghai museum is on the metro.

Be warned…. When purchasing a one way ticket though, you only have 2 hours to complete the journey.
