Stay bundled up while climbing on the Great Wall in the winter. I got overheated and out of breath climbing, and opened my coat to deep breath the minus 8 degree air. BIG mistake. I developed what the Chinese doc called "burnt throat" in Chinese. High fever, very sore throat, bad cough!!
It is hard to communicate pharmaceutical needs...

If you decide to use the local mode of transportation, the pedicab, especially in the bitter winter, when the passenger compartment is enclosed, be sure to negotiate the price before stepping in. It will cost a lot more when you ask at the destination. (But it won't kill you if you paid more!!!)

When I visited in 1998, Beijing men has this horrible habit of spitting everywhere and anywhere in the streets! You'll be walking and then suddenly the man in front of you would turn around and spit in front of you!!!
It's really disgusting and shameful to have such a behaviour. Hope by now in preparation for the Olympics, they have cleaned up their act.
