You need quite some time to visit the entire compound. It's a huge family residence, built in the late 18th century. I read that altogether it has 231 courtyards and 2,078 houses. My wife told me that upto about 20 years ago it was inhabited by 200 local families, but then the government cleared and renovated it. It's really nice to walk around here for a couple of hours. After a while you hardly even know where you are anymore.
One of the wings is now a hotel.

The day before we visited this place, we visited the Qiao manor. That one is a lot smaller and less impressive, but has its own atmosphere.
