I am no sure how long the Pingyao council will allow the wall to stay as it is before they get hit with possible insurance claims. It would be a shame to alter it in any way.The city wall has a charm all to itself but there are no walls on the inside to stop people falling off. If you have children I would be extra careful and think twice about...more
Based on the glowing reviews on Pingyao, I expected to find this city a fascinating place. Having been there, I am exceedingly disappointed in the way it was portrayed.First of all, an ESSENTIAL piece of information that nobody mentioned - you CANNOT go into ANY of the tourist sites without the 150 Yuan ticket. 150 includes all, BUT, and I can't...more

If travelling during winter a hot water bottle!!
Miscellaneous: You'll need a portable reading light as we found that most lights connected to the top bunk in the train cabin did not work.
As well, we found that most bedside lights were very weak.
Torch to take along as as it gets dark exhibits are not lit.
The Catholic church in Pingyao is situated in the Old Quarter close to city walls. The church, what surprised me, was open. It probably belongs to "official" Catholic Church in China (the Church is divided in two: official - approved by the communist authorities and unofficial - hidden and persecuted). We walked inside and noticed that it is in a...more
I took a walk around the eastern side of the town where no tourists seem to venture and here's some photo's of the buildings. Pingyao looks like it's actually quite a poor town despite the barrage of tourists. This is the "real" side of the town and well worth a visit to get some contrast to that of the main tourist areas. Some of the buildings...more
In order to visit all the attractions, there's a one-time admission ticket that allows entry to about 20 attractions. It costs RMB120 and is valid for three days.
