After a long and arduous day in Taiyuan trying to find the bank and then right bus to Wu Tai Shan, and even riding one to a completely different place and then having to backtrack, I ended up giving up and catching a taxi. Most of the drivers quote 800yuan (approx $80 for an uphill 4 hour drive) as standard for this journey. I managed to get a ride for 600yuan. But, on the way back down from the mountain, I found a guy offering a ride to Datong for only 200 ($20), about the same distance. Because of my tight schedule I decided to go for taxis. Buses from Wu Tai Shan to Datong are about 50yuan, but leave at erratic times. Make sure you are out on the main road at about 7am if you want to catch one that will get you to Datong or Taiyuan by lunchtime. There doesn't seem to be an actual stop as such, and the Datong bus station marked on the Lonely Planet is actually for private tour buses. Ask at CITC on the main road, they were helpful. The drive north to Datong over the steppe is beautiful, stay awake if you can! Leave a Comment Theme: Other
