Favorite thing: Thousands and thousands of small and big Buddhas are carved into the yellow wall of the dry mountains around Datong. Buddhist monchs and pilgrims carved those relief, because they thought, that every little statue gives them more merits for their next live.

Favorite thing: About 16km west from Datong are the famous Yungang caves. Carved into the yellow Wuzhon mountains are about 55 caves and thousands of Buddha Statues and reliefs.
Yungang can easily be reached by bus from Datong.

Big Buddha

Favorite thing: Most impressive are some big Buddha statues. They were made in 5th century, when Buddhism had just reached this area coming from India.

In many of the faces you can still see the strong influence of India on early Buddhist art.

Many aspects you will find on any Buddha statue all over the world: for example the long ears. The long ears are meant to show, that Buddha came from a very rich family. He had been used to wear heavy earrings, that prolonged his ears.
