Five Colours Earth: Stylish clothes with a Chinese hint

by Saagar

Five Colours Earth is a company with fairly decentralized production and design. it produces clothes and some other textile stuff based on traditional ethnic and historical designs and styles. The outcome is quite fashionable styles of individual designs and rarely two pieces alike. One problem with Chines clothing is that it makes you into a pretend-Chinese. With these clothes, not necessarily so. I have selected pieces that go with jeans, very plain home-use comfortable stuff, and some pieces that I can use for formal Chinese visits/dinners when style is demanded, but tie and jacket is a pain, and I can get away without this way. Men's long sleeved shirts, jackets.Women's full-length or short gowns, short-or longsleeved shirts. Quite expensive, from 500 RMB to 2000 depending on materials and designs used.

The Dirt Market

by EGitan

This market has everything......chinese silk, jelwery, fake antiques, books, statues, beautiful calligraphy horse hair brushes, scrolls, paintings, artwork, furniture....you name it. Get there early and bring a calculator. You will want to bargin with it. I got some very good deals on some nice scrolls, and calligraphy brushes. Be persistant but also be nice. And be prepared to ship any thing that looks like an antique back. You cannot take certain items out of China without getting a certificate stating that it is not an actual historical relic. I learned the hard way and lost a nice statue. And avoid buying Jade there. Go to the Friendship Store where it is authentic Jade. And have fun!!!!! depends on how well you bargin

Silk

by nepalgoods

China is known as the "Kingdon of Silk". Since more tha twothousand years silkworms are raised and the fine thread, which they produce, is woven into the most wonderful and colouful fabrics. Specially the Hangzhou Silk is made for a great variety of silk product, including satin, damask and brocades. I have seen and touched the silk from Thailand, India and other countries. In my opinion, the silk from China is the best quality.

Shops till Your Heart's Content

by Gage17

For me, it was frustrating trying to find the perfect Chinese souvenir... and one that I wouldn't be able to get in Chinatown back home. Still, with a little perseverance and patience, you should be able to find the souvenir or gift that's right for you. Most places will sell the same old "Made in China" crap you see all over, but keep an eye out, because there are shops that specialize in local crafts. The Chinese are great for bargaining and will usually quote you a price on a calculator (because of language difficulties). Feel free to punch in your price and let the bidding begin.

Wangfujing Street

by FlyingShanice

Wangfujing is now considered the central heart of the city. Certainly from Wangfujing all areas of Beijing are easily accessible. Wangfujing is a fairly long street. A walk from end to end would take you about 30 minutes, and that's without looking at any shops. The street has two major shopping malls, one of which, Oriental Plaza, sprawls a further 2 blocks to the east (and another 15 minute walk). Wangfujing street is also home to a number of large department stores, souvenir stores, and whole side streets full of food stalls, Chinese painting stores and other goodies.Getting to Wangfujing is pretty easy. You can take the subway and get off at the line 1 Wangfujing stop. Alternatively, you can of course take the taxi.

Department stores or small clothesshops: Rainponcho

by aukjejetty

When you ride a bike regularly, you will no how anoying it is when it rains and you get all wet ;-)In China they certainly know, they are a biking nation [just like the dutch] and they have some wonderful raincoats [ponchos actually]. I bought one at a small shop, but you can also get them at the larger stores where they sell everything. If you plan to travel through china for a long time, you should buy this item where you start your trip. Biking is a wonderful way to see places in many areas, so it will be helpful if you can cover yourself quickly when it starts to rain. When you are walking with a backpack they are great too, because they are wide and you can carry them over your bag!I bought rainponchos before, but never as strong as the ones you can get in China! The price range is $2-$6

by coolpanda87

In China, everything is paid for in Remembi, China's Official currency. Due to government restrictions, Remembi can only be exchanged in China, & no amounts of it is to leave the country. The current exchange rate is: 1 USD = 8.2677 Yuan "yuan" means dollar in Chinese

BEIJING : SILK MARKET

by swesn

The SILK MARKET or XIU SHUI SHI CHANG is where you can buy many clothe-items like North Face, Timberland jackets, even branded things like Prada. Naturally, not many are authentic. This is also the place to buy your Oriental cheongsam - the tight, figure-hugging Oriental dress.Go EARLY to avoid crowds and remember to bargain.Or, go LATE in the afternoon, just before closing (should be before sun-down) when vendors are keen to make their final sales before they pack up.
