Red Pandas seem to be the poor cousins of the Giant Pandas. Not as cute, not as fluffy, not as big, not as endangered and certainly not as interesting!
After the Giant pandas have had their breakfast and start to "slow down" and have a sleep, it is only a short walk to the bamboo enclosure that houses the Red Pandas. These pandas reminded me of the Raccoons that frequent the lookout in Stanley Park in Vancouver....only red. They appear to be just a mischievous and the more you look the more of them you see. They seem to be multiplying before your eyes!

Anne and I arrived early in the morning and were some of the first visitors through the gates. The strategy here was to see the pandas eating their first meal of the day, watching the pandas at their most active time of day before they sleep after breakfast and finally we wanted to avoid the heat of the day.

Like most people that travel to the Sichuan Province of China and Chengdu, Anne and I visited the area to see the Giant pandas. The Panda Sanctuary is located close to the edge of the city and can be reached within a thirty minute drive
We were in the sanctuary for approx 3 hours and Anne was so pleased that she saw so many pandas, literally dozens.
The Sanctuary also has a large number of red pandas to see but they are certainly not as popular as the Giant Panda.

The Panda Sanctuary just outside of Chengdu was our sole reason for travelling to Chengdu whilst in China. We spent half a day in the sanctuary. It was interesting and the work that they do here for the extinct Panda'd in China is huge. However, at times it did feel like a zoo. The animals do have plenty of room and you see the pandas eating bamboo, you can visit the Panda nursery and see the very unusual Red Panda roaming here too.
We did our trip through our hostel; this included transport from the hostel to the sanctuary and back, entrance fees and free time inside the sanctuary.

I joined the organised tour from the hostel to the Panda Park. You have to go there early like 8-8.30am because the pandas do their activities such as play and eat in the morning time. After that, a lot of them go sleeping so you can't see much of their lovely faces and actions. They are really special and cute, just like stuffed animals. They look very gentle and they love to play like children. You can take pictures with pandas and it costs 400yuan and if you take pictures with small pandas and hold them in arms (i think), it costs 1000yuan.

During your time in Chengdu it is a must to visit the Panda Breeding Centre. We went on an organised tour which included van pick up from our hotel, guided tour around the breeding centre, postcards and entrance tickets. Total cost Y70.
The breeding centre is very well set up for tourists as all the signs are in Chinese and English and the paths are well kept. We started with the older pandas before moving on to the babies. You have an option to hold a baby panda for a lovely price of US$150!! (I don't think so!!)
We then moved on to the red pandas where we also had the option of holding one for a lesser price of US$50. (I still don't think so!!)
After the pandas, there is a gift shop and movie theatre where they explain the breeding process which is actually quite interesting!
Admission Fee: CNY 30
Opening Hours: 7:30am to 6:00pm
Recommended Time for a Visit: About two hours

As others have said here already, you can't skip this centre. I'm sure that everyone who goes here comes out with a big smile on his face. We didn't go to the museum and we didn't watch the movie, but we just watched the panda's for hours. The big ones are really nice to look at, because they make everyone jealous with their easygoing lifestyle, and the little ones are really funny. When we were there 8 little ones were playing outside, and we laughed our asses off. They were falling the whole time, but they didn't get hurt. One of them fell twice in 1 minute time from about a meter high, another one fell into the water and was all dirty, yet another one fell from a toy horse, etc... . The red panda's are also nice to look at, but less cute of course.
The parc itself is nice to walk around in, so definitely you will have a relaxing day when you come here.

The Panda breeding center outside of Chengdu is delightful, near and perfect...
get there early and see the cuties being fed, frolicking with the bamboo, pooping, fighting with each other....
just being the wonderful animals they are.....
four adults behaved like kids just watching them.....
30 rmb to go in....
** pay the 400rmb donation and get your picture taken with Lan Lan (blue blue)... he is incredible and very happy to eat his apple and close his eyes as you stand behind him touching his cute bristled black "hair"..... (he's the one in my picture on the homepage)
going back to the city is easy.... taxis abound....
going to Woolong may be spectacular-- but I was told the road is under construction....
