We (My wife and me) went to Huanglong on May 1 2008. As May 1 is a national holiday in China, and we expected the place to be swamped with people. it wasn't. lot's of people but not overcrowded.
Upon arrival we learned that for this part of the world, May is Dry Season, meaning that the main attraction of the park, the coloful waterpools would mostly be dry.
We didn't have a choice in the matter, as we were already there, and the timing of the trip was defined by other constraints, that could not be changed.
To the credit of the Park's staff, that do not really speak English, they had a handwritten piece of paper that disclosed/warned us of this fact.
We can say that here, the yellow is the winner colour as you descend the mountain. Large deposits of calcium carbonate, which is a sort of yellow mud, deposits up to the valley in the shape of a dragon
Small ponds, waterfalls, river bed ... , with its yellow hues, contrast with the colour of the forest, snowy mountains, the sky ... make Huang Long a memorable site
At the top of Huang Long, near where the temples are, there are hundreds of small lakes with blue colours ranging from turquoise blue to green and going through hundreds of bluish hues, is a real visual pleasure
The whole temple consists of three small ones; the front, the middle and the rear temples, which mark the head, the waist and the tail of a dragon respectively, going all the way down the valley. The front temple has almost been ruined. The middle temple has five halls remaining, to worship the Goddess of Mercy, and the 18 Arhats. As for the rear temple, it enshrines the Dragon King.
The Tibetan Buddhists temples, are highlighted in the top of the mountain and they stand out from the distance when you are away from the top , as they are surrounded by trees, mountains, and lakes of blue and yellow clear waters and with a thin snow cover
Huanglong is best known for its "five wonders", namely, colored ponds, beach flows, Snow Mountains, and fascinating canyons and forests. The spectacular travertine flows zigzag their ways through virgin forests, much like a gold giant dragon.
We visited in an Autumn day when the trees were with green , yellow and red tones and it was snowing , but it was not a cold day and then we understood why they are so proud in China of Huang Long
The entrance ticket costs 200Yuan and the cable car ( only to go up )80 Yuan
To go from Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong is necessary to raise the 4007 meters of the Snow Mountain Ridge .
The views are splendid as you may see a mountain landscape with all its snowy peaks and you may see also an snow men
The height , despite reaching the 4007 m , does not affect too much, since you stay there a short time and besides because you descend very quickly to 3.200m
Autumn is supposedly the best season to visit the Huanglong, Jiuzhaigou and neighbouring Nature Parks because of the colourful foliage and superb weather.
Winter is extremely cold and the roads up to Huanglong may be covered with snow and ice which makes it a hazard to drive there.
Spring and summer brings melting snow atop Huanglong, leading to large amounts of water cascading down from the peak and forming many dramatic waterfalls which may not be seen during the latter seasons.
These are not exactly "must-see" sights. In fact, they are common sights on the hiking path around Huanglong.
Formed by mineral deposits, the ponds will look different according to the seasons mainly due to the amount of water that cascades from the peak.
Generally, the waters are a greenish, yellow tinge with yellowish-white lime-like deposits around the edge of the ponds.
Huang Long (Yellow Dragon) Scenic Area is located in the Song Pan County, northern Si Chuan province. It is about three hours of bus ride from Jiu Zhai Gou National Park (See Jiu Zhai Gou Travelogue), and 340+ km from Cheng Du.
Due to its special geological changes, Huang Long Ditch, on the back of the snow peak of Min Shan Mountain, forms 3,500+ exquisitely wrought calcific ponds with various colors shinning under the sun. The colors change as the light changes. The whole area looks like a dragon coming down from the snow mountains.
It is on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.
Not to be excluded there are also five waterfalls, four stalactite caves and three ancient temples, and all in the same valley, which looks like a dragon surging down from snowcapped peaks of Mt. Minshan.
This is a relatively more interesting sight in Huanglong. Note the entrance of the grotto (around centre of picture).
If you are in Huanglong, you must visit nearby Jiuzhaigou. Anyway, tourists usually visit these 2 places together. You can visit my VT Jiuzhaigou page for more information.
Huanglong is not just about water and minerals. Even the trees at this place can be in some interesting patterns.
Along the way, there are pavillions where you can sit down and catch a breath as the journey up is not easy with the high altitude.
