Songpan Things to Do

  • Horseback Trekking with Tibetan culture...

The Songpan area was part of greater Tibet in the old days and is said to be an area of the most fearsome fighting with the People's Liberation Army during 1950. A horseback trek is an excellent way to experience the Tibetan culture without all the required permit(s) or possible political problems of going to Tibet. However, I definitely recommend...

  • Princess WenCheng

Just about everyone stops at Princess WenCheng statues, even some of the buses going to Jiuzhaigou . So get out and take a photo with the famous Chinese Princess. Maybe it will help bring lasting peace to the Tibetan area like she did for many years.See my Songpan page for the Princess WenSheng story. Please rate this and my other tips when you find...

  • Picture with locals

Some people might put this under Tourist traps, but further on you will read why I put it under Things to do. When we came down from the Zhaga waterfall, there were some local Tibetan women walking around there. One woman came to talk to my wife in a very friendly manner. Of course we knew that sooner or later she would ask money, but she was...

  • Zhaga waterfall

The layered Zhaga waterfall is quite impressive to see. Especially because it's suddenly there as you come out of the woods. It's 104 meters high and about 35 to 40 meters wide. It's the biggest calcified waterfall in China. The nice thing is that you can go all the way up and come down right next to the waterfall. As I said before, when we visited...

  • Munigou valley

Munigou valley is about an hour driving from Songpan city. We came here the day after we visited Jiuzhaigou. Of course Jiuzhaigou is a lot bigger, but this area is not less nice. Actually there are two scenic spots in this area, Zhaga waterfall and Er'daohai, but we only visited the first one. We visited Jiuzhaigou and Munigou only with the both of...

  • Songpan horse trek

The horse treks out of Songpan are the highlight of Sichuan travels. The price is modest at Y65-80 per day, including meals, tents, bedding, cold water gear, and lovable guides. Even though you might feel somewhat less than satisfied with a short trek to Munigou Hot Springs, you definitely get your money's worth trekking to Ice Mountain. Treks to...

  • Authentic Sichuan Food in Songpan, China

There are many small inexpensive restaurants near Princess WenCheng statue. Try one if you are brave for some real, Sichuan food. The rest rooms will be down the street from the restaurant, see my Songpan and China local customs tips for more info and photos of restroomsPlease rate this and my other tips when you find then interesting, useful, or...

  • At the entrance of Munigou

One of my nicest restaurant experiences in China. After I went to this one I realized that most of the expensive restaurants are only expensive because of the decoration. We came here when the place was still empty. The food was really really simple but extremely well-prepared. While we were eating the waitresses were heating their feet on a stove....

  • Street Food

Songpan has some of the best streetfood ever. They have all kinds of Tibetan fried breads, or tofu and vegetables cooked over a spitfire. I really loved the tofu slices with chili pepper, and the Tibetan breads. They also have yak meat if you're adventurous!

Bus from Chengdu to Songpan, China

by MikeySoft Written Sep 15, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You can take the bus to Songpan at Chengdu Chadianzi bus station everyday in the morning. It takes about 8 hours and the cost is about 50 RMB. Things are always changing in China so ask your hotel/hostile for help and schedules. Many of the busses and tours to Jiuzhaigou will also have a short stop in Songpan so you can take a picture of Princess WenCheng.

The busses in the picture are backed up because a truck hit a rock overhang on the highway. It was only about 1/2 additional wait.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I've only stopped at Songpan for a pit stop between Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou . Specking of pit stop, the public restroom is right across the street from Princess Princess Wencheng statue.

Make sure you have your own toilet or tissue paper.

I was in Songpan during 2006 but I understand Songpan is open to travel again after the 2008 earthquake.

Songpan Off The Beaten Path

  • Villages on the road to Munigou

If you have the chance, take some time to have a look at the local villages on the way to Munigou. It's like stepping back in time. I didn't want to disturb the people so I only took some pictures from far, but it made a big impression on me.

  • SONGPAN : HORSE TREK

A great way to experience the breath-taking mountain scenery, glacial rivers, pine trees and remote Tibetan villages. I joined a four-day horse trek to view the Ice Mountain. • Look at us

Picture is my lunch at Songpan with worldwide backpackers gathered for a quick meal, tasty for sure. This is a Hui-Moslem restaurant, selling beers is definitely a must in China, this one is no exception. 2 yuans for a big bottle of beer, don't tell me you can't afford.

  • The main street

The main street is so straight leading to the big ancient gate made of rocks, some 2000 years ago I heard. The funny thing in China is the hotels, as usual we can only stay in hotels with special certificate of aliens, and unfortunately, Songpan has only two alien-certificates which means tourists are not so welcome to this place. Hotels are...
