Horseback Trekking with Tibetan culture in Sichuan

Horseback Trekking with Tibetan culture in Sichuan, Songpan

MikeySoft Says:  The Songpan area was part of greater Tibet in the old days and is said to be an area of the most fearsome fighting with the People's Liberation Army during 1950. A horseback trek is an excellent way to experience the Tibetan culture without all the required permit(s) or...

Princess WenCheng

Princess WenCheng, Songpan

MikeySoft Says:  Just about everyone stops at Princess WenCheng statues, even some of the buses going to Jiuzhaigou . So get out and take a photo with the famous Chinese Princess. Maybe it will help bring lasting peace to the Tibetan area like she did for many years.See my Songpan page for...

Picture with locals

Picture with locals, Songpan

Museeuw Says:  Some people might put this under Tourist traps, but further on you will read why I put it under Things to do. When we came down from the Zhaga waterfall, there were some local Tibetan women walking around there. One woman came to talk to my wife in a very friendly manner. Of...

Zhaga waterfall

Zhaga waterfall, Songpan

Museeuw Says:  The layered Zhaga waterfall is quite impressive to see. Especially because it's suddenly there as you come out of the woods. It's 104 meters high and about 35 to 40 meters wide. It's the biggest calcified waterfall in China. The nice thing is that you can go all the way up...

Munigou valley

Munigou valley, Songpan

Museeuw Says:  Munigou valley is about an hour driving from Songpan city. We came here the day after we visited Jiuzhaigou. Of course Jiuzhaigou is a lot bigger, but this area is not less nice. Actually there are two scenic spots in this area, Zhaga waterfall and Er'daohai, but we only...

Songpan horse trek

Songpan horse trek, Songpan

bellatrix Says:  The horse treks out of Songpan are the highlight of Sichuan travels. The price is modest at Y65-80 per day, including meals, tents, bedding, cold water gear, and lovable guides. Even though you might feel somewhat less than satisfied with a short trek to Munigou Hot Springs,...

Authentic Sichuan Food in Songpan, China

Authentic Sichuan Food in Songpan, China, Songpan

MikeySoft Says:  There are many small inexpensive restaurants near Princess WenCheng statue. Try one if you are brave for some real, Sichuan food. The rest rooms will be down the street from the restaurant, see my Songpan and China local customs tips for more info and photos of...

Lu Yuan: At the entrance of Munigou

Lu Yuan: At the entrance of Munigou, Songpan

Museeuw Says:  One of my nicest restaurant experiences in China. After I went to this one I realized that most of the expensive restaurants are only expensive because of the decoration. We came here when the place was still empty. The food was really really simple but extremely...

Various: Street Food

Various: Street Food, Songpan

bellatrix Says:  Songpan has some of the best streetfood ever. They have all kinds of Tibetan fried breads, or tofu and vegetables cooked over a spitfire. I really loved the tofu slices with chili pepper, and the Tibetan breads. They also have yak meat if you're adventurous!

Star Moon Restaurant: Great Muslim food in Songpan

Star Moon Restaurant: Great Muslim food in Songpan, Songpan

bellatrix Says:  Star Moon Restaurant has green moons in the windows and a green sign overhead. Although these Muslim dishes are on the expensive side (Y15-20), they are well worth the price. Friendly cooks let you come into the kitchen to see how it's done. I'm a vegetarian, so I ordered...

Bus from Chengdu to Songpan, China

You can take the bus to Songpan at Chengdu Chadianzi bus station everyday in the morning. It takes about 8 hours and the cost is about 50 RMB. Things are always changing in China so ask your hotel/hostile for help and schedules. Many of the busses and tours to Jiuzhaigou will also have a short stop in Songpan so you can take a picture of Princess WenCheng.

The busses in the picture are backed up because a truck hit a rock overhang on the highway. It was only about 1/2 additional wait.

WC - Songpan, Sichuan, China

I've only stopped at Songpan for a pit stop between Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou . Specking of pit stop, the public restroom is right across the street from Princess Princess Wencheng statue.

Make sure you have your own toilet or tissue paper.

I was in Songpan during 2006 but I understand Songpan is open to travel again after the 2008 earthquake.

Villages on the road to Munigou

Villages on the road to Munigou, Songpan

Museeuw Says:  If you have the chance, take some time to have a look at the local villages on the way to Munigou. It's like stepping back in time. I didn't want to disturb the people so I only took some pictures from far, but it made a big impression on me.

SONGPAN : HORSE TREK

SONGPAN : HORSE TREK, Songpan

swesn Says:  A great way to experience the breath-taking mountain scenery, glacial rivers, pine trees and remote Tibetan villages. I joined a four-day horse trek to view the Ice Mountain. But there are various other trails, some just 1 day, some 3 days. There is one guide for one...

l_joo Says:  Picture is my lunch at Songpan with worldwide backpackers gathered for a quick meal, tasty for sure. This is a Hui-Moslem restaurant, selling beers is definitely a must in China, this one is no exception. 2 yuans for a big bottle of beer, don't tell me you can't afford.

General view

l_joo Says:  What I saw at a point is this scene, good to share with you. Landscapes and sceneries are best to not write too much, look is enough.

The main street

The main street, Songpan

l_joo Says:  The main street is so straight leading to the big ancient gate made of rocks, some 2000 years ago I heard. The funny thing in China is the hotels, as usual we can only stay in hotels with special certificate of aliens, and unfortunately, Songpan has only two...

Pray the Almighty

Pray the Almighty, Songpan

l_joo Says:  It simply means to Pray the Almighty in Chinese writing. This is on top of the door arch of the mosque. I am not Muslim, that's all I can provide for tourists.
