Terra Cotta Army - Xian.
This is an amazing sight, taking 11 years to complete and only found again in 1974 and opened for public viewing in 1979. Here sits replicas of what the warriors and horses looked like in those days of the Qin dynasty.

Bigger than the Forbidden City and smaller than the Summer Palace, this is well worth a visit.THe design refelcts ancient thoughts that Heaven is round and the Earth is Square.Try out the Echoe Stones, such simple fun, along with the Echo Wall which allows your words to be carried around the wall so that if you whisper something one end, your pal can hear it at the other end quite clearly. Watch out for the Nine Dragon Cypress tree, getting it's name fromt the nine branches which intertwine.

This is the largest City Central Square in the world, here you can watch the national flag raising ceremony and see places such as the Great Hall of the People and Mao Zedong Memorial Hall. People come here to take time out. As you will see from the photo, there was a clock counting down the seconds to when China regained control of Hong Kong.

Gu Gong in Chinese, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is north of Tia'nanmen Square and is the world's largest palace. There is a moat surrounding it, within the walls there is one short of a 2000 buildings. There are two sections to the palace, the Outer Court where the King ruled and the Inner Court where he lived with his family. The walls are made from glutinous rice and egg whites, unexpectedly etremely strong.

The section we visited was the remains from the Ming Dynasty, it is well preserved and a beautiful sight to see. Even though it rained it was still a fantastic place to go to, the wonder of how it was built to the wonder of the scenery beyond it.
From what I gather a Hutong is today it seems different from the one I experienced as you will see from the pics. At the time we were told they were out of bounds but curiosity was too tempting and I was glad I had had my typhoid injection. However, it was an insight into the life of the average Chinese, how they lived from day to day, I loved visiting this place as it gave a truer version of society as it was then.

Whilst in Guiling, a cruise from here to Yangshuo is an experience to enjoy the fantastic Karst peaks by. Whilst peasants work on the paddy fields, nearby the water buffalo whallow in mud pools, school children, grinning happily and fisherman working their cormorants float by on their crude boats. These fisherman tie a cord around the Cormorants neck, send them off to catch fish and retrieve the fish from their throats when they surface, offering them a fish every so often for good service.Water buffalo graze everywhere and are part of the countryside, just like sheep and cows are in England. It is a world away from the busy, bussling cities of China, no horns blowing, no polution, just a breeze in your face and the basics of life surrounding you.

When you arrive in the South of China. It becomes unescapable that the area is a little behind the Northern and Coastal regions.Initially it is something of a culture shock to see exactly how poor and depressed the area seems. However, after a little while you adjust and it all seems quite different and strangely attractive. There are many interesting things to see. Old temples, and markets, gardens, and an old college from Imperial Times as well as palaces etc. The food is not for the traveller determined to eat western food at all costs. You wont find any.But I found everything interesting even if I didn't always know what I was eating.I also managed to buy some good quality Jade at not too expensive a price in comparison to the North and places such as Shanghai. Try It and see.

8000+ steps can't be wrong! Go to Tai Shan and climb the steps to the top of the most sacred Chinese mountain. There are plenty of places to stay that are over priced for foreigners! Get a chinese person to go with you and you will save lots of money and hassle. If you don't you may end up drugged in a tub full of ice with one of your kidney's missing.

China is one of the most interesting countries that I have been to. The history of this place is amazing,The Moguls, The Emporers, The Long March. one could go on and on.The museums,The Forbidden City in Beiijing,The Great Wall, The old temples,The wonder of modern Shanghaii, The art -dec Dalian(Port Arthur in the 1930's)The differences between North, Middle and South China are very striking. To really experience China, one should allocate a s much time as possible,The people for the most part are very friendly, although officialdom can be a bit of a nuisance.Still they are only doing their job and one must remember Confuscious on the subject of patience.Watching the construction of new buildings in some of the inland towns, where lots of people are engaged in construction as they have done it for hundreds of years ,in many cases without any modern machinary, is a very humbling experience...
